Pauline Marois will become the 30th premier of Quebec today -- and the very first woman to hold the job in that province.

Thanks Cal for the link to the article. Sounds like she has her work cut out for her as the Harper Government seems bent on putting roadblocks in her way. Read and noted.

:/ I don't like separatist parties, plus all the things she said when she was talking to Quebec, she's a bigot

Part of the trouble, and attraction, of the PQ, is that it has all of the emotionally attractive aspects of both the Left and the Right, and also all of their destructive ones too. It plays the liberal progressive, endlessly seeking to use the government to "level the playing field" in favour of groups painted as weak victims of oppression. However, it has painted the majority of Quebecois, the French, as the weak, threatened, minority by looking at matters in terms of all of Canada and the U.S. rather than just the extent of its jurisdiction, so it also panders specifically to the majority. This is an extremely dangerous combination as it has subverted the political forces which traditionally work in favour of weaker groups to operate in favour of the majority at their expense, leaving itself without local opponents to prevent oppression. Even worse, the only real force that can stop it is the federal government, and its whole separatist narrative is that the Canadian federal government has no business intervening in Quebec, that Quebec should be independent of Canada, so Canadian federal intervention can easily backfire.

Being woman or man is immaterial here. For some reason the Quebecers are endless whiners. They want special treatment for who knows why. I don't think they ever got over losing to the British back in the late 1700's and have been pompous spoiled sore losers ever since. And I'm french.

While I am not sympathetic to the separatist cause and generally loathe the Parti Québécois' xenophobic linguistic policies, I believe that the results of the most recent provincial election were positive.

The Liberals had had three consecutive mandates and were in need of a little time on the sidelines to regroup.
In general, the PQ is more progressive socially than the ruling Liberals were, and since the PQ is running a minority government, they will have to cooperate with at least one other party to pass any legislation. This will prevent Madame Marois from attempting to pass any laws which are too draconian.

With a little over 30% of the popular vote, any hope of holding a referendum on Québec independence will remain a pipe dream for now. However, given the Harper Regime's penchant for polarizing politics and pitting one region of the country against the other, Madame Marois will have plenty of opportunities to pick fights with the federal government and stir up support for the independence option.
