Shrimp, or prawns, have been off my diet for decades, since I found out how ecologically-damaging shrimp trawling was; and I'm not confidant about the chemical safety of farmed shrimp from the East -- I know that various chemicals and antibiotics are used in farming seafood there that aren't considered safe here. Now, I find out that seafood farming includes human abuse too?

This is another case of man's greed and stupidity.

Here we were, innocently eating prawns in the naive belief it was keeping poor people in work, but turns out it's quite the opposite. Terrible to read about the horrors in that article. Definitely won't buy them again. If there's no demand then they'll stop building prawn farms.

If you get wild prawns from the Gulf (there are safe areas), or even wild white prawns fished in northern California from the fisherman who catch them, it is worth the extra cost.

I only eat our local seafood where I live.

Good reason not to eat prawns. This is also a result of a few corporations controlling our entire food supply. We still have the Sherman Anti Trust law on the books, but no one in power seems to have the guts to enforce it.

I find it quite interesting that one by one of the creatures mentioned in the Bible as being unclean are also being recognised by those who have no belief in the Bible whatsoever are also discarding them for whatever reasons.Seems that there must be something in the original which thinking people eventually work out to be fact. People really are NOT stupid. Eventually, by some means or other, the message finally gets through.

Oh, man, and I so love tempura shrimp! I'll quit eating my beloved shrimp for a humane cause, however. I quit consuming lobster and crab long ago; I have compassion for the critters.

These critters are bottom dwellers and live on sewer as well as getting a dose of heavy metal. Asian waters are totally polluted. I used to love prawns years ago, I used to buy them of fishing boats at a small North Sea harbour (Cuxhafen, Germany), they were ready to eat, smoked and still warm. We loved it. I moved to SE Asia for 5 years and totally lost my appetite for shellfish, I got sick many times. Since, I have settled in Australia, our supermarkets are full of Asian, cheap and nasty prawns. My wife is Asian and loves prawn curry. My number one rule is, you want your prawn curry, do not buy Asian prawns (Mekong delta, SE Asia, China, etc,) Buy local prawns, they cost a lot more, but they come out of cleaner waters, quality not quantity, I tell her, enjoy.
Now, why is our own shell fish so unaffordable. Japan knows fish and they love quality and they buy our shellfish and fish very cheaply and we pay the difference for subsidised exports. We have to eat rubbish from polluted Asian waters, no thank you. The only fish we buy is from our own waters and New Zealand.
