Entwined with the human costs of the storm, which killed more than 100 people and caused billions of dollars in damage, is another significant toll - that of the cherished pets that died or were left behind as families fled for their lives

I understand completely why people are deeply concerned for their pets during this storm. I feel for the animals and their humans.

I feel so very sad for all the pets that were left behind, lost, or killed by this horrible storm. I feel that alongside setting up shelters for humans when such tragedies strike we should be setting up shelters for pets too. The reason I am making this suggestion is that shelters are notoriously bad about letting pet owners bring their animals into shelters with them. It just seems to me that DVM's should get together and figure out a solution for sheltering pets since they are the most qualified to make correct decisions concerning the care of animals in the event of any catastrophic emergency.

so sad, the poor pets don't understand what has happened. I know I would risk my life for my pets.

It is important for each and every person that owns a pet to have a disaster plan in motion. I have a crate for my animals and thank you Cal this just gave me the idea to stock up on freeze dried food. I put all of this into the crate since my animals don't sleep in it. In case of a fire here in California my pets are my first priority.

It is so upsetting for all of those pets that have lost touch with their owners, or even lost their owner. Thankfully, there are people that rush in to help out and try to give these animals some calming love.
