Bolivia Enacts New Law for Mother Earth

Can the Earth have legal rights? Is a radical change in the way governments and people interact with the planet possible? A new Bolivian law says yes, defining Mother Earth as a living system with rights instead of an object open to unlimited exploitation

Mother Earth is a living system with rights--so agree and have been saying that for years. How in the heck do these idgits running everything think they will live without Mother Earth? If not for Mother Earth they would not even be here--obviously they don't have any brains or they would know that--but then again they have not yet learned that "You can't eat money!" Bless all who love and respect Mother Earth.

Defining our planet as one living system is now catching on globally. We have those in countries beyond the US to thank for moving this important agenda forward. Maybe now we can begin to catch up.

Whatever gender you wish to attribute the planet, it's interesting to see that without the defining agenda from the plutocrats of America, other countries can take the lead of common sense without the repercussions of the "Romneyclass" - let's listen!

Much more enlightened than our US Supreme Court deeming corporate personhood via Citizens United.

Enacting a law and enforcing the law are, unfortunately, two different things.

It seems as if it's only lip service however it might be a step in the right direction.

Humankind has not woven the web of life.
We are but one thread within it.
Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.
All things are bound together.
All things connect.
Chief Seattle, 1854
When all the trees have been cut down,
When all the animals have been hunted,
When all the waters are polluted,
When all the air is unsafe to breathe,
Only then will you discover
You cannot eat money.
Cree Prophecy
Treat the earth well.
It was not given to you by your parents,
it was loaned to you by your children.
We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors
We borrow it from our Children.

"Bolivia must now begin forming the government positions and oversight committees necessary to make the ideas set out in the new law a reality, and only time will prove what role it plays in redefining human relationships with the Earth in Bolivia and, perhaps, beyond."

It is just a beginning. But an important one. Isaac Asimov in his wonderful Foundation Trilogy wrote of a sentient planet, Gaea, where all elements were interconnected AND aware of each, humans, plants, the planet. I think he was more prescient than even he knew. If earth is sentient we have found no way to communicate with her, but she is communicating her displeasure with what we have done and are doing through the ever-increasing number and ferocity of storms we are now seeing. What remains to be seen is whether WE live through it. The planet will, but it may well be without us, once it has cleansed itself of the toxins we have spewed into the atmosphere and the scars we have made on the ground. I like this idea. I wish the global community were so wise as to adopt it too. Yesterday.

Gotta love taking care of our earth, but what about the sentient creatures on it that still don't have rights? We have all sorts of laws against pollution all over the world - which is great! - but yet, there still aren't laws in some places against the abuse of children. I'm glad this website has a broader view to hep all sorts of causes, and isn't super exclusive ...

This is the way to go! Too bad the rest of the world won't adopt this philosophy.

I like the new law. Hope the world adopts it. Maybe there will be hope for mankind if they start respecting the earth and wildlife. There will be some kicking and screaming about this is unjust because it doesn't serve their greed and ego, but this is the only way to go. Good for Bolivia. Hope they enforce the law.
