When Mrs Halappanavar begged for a medical termination, she was crisply told that it was against the law and that she was in "a Catholic country". Four days after the baby died, she died of septicaemia

2008, I thought they had to allow abortions to be part of Europe.

There is no excuse for this in a modern world. Why do we always have to fight religion on the simplest of problems. I don't remember thu shalt not save mother after baby dies etched in stone anywhere. Isn't it mans interpretation of what man thinks God wants anyway.

Shameful. I don't understand how a fetus can possibly be more important than the woman carrying it. It is ridiculous. I think they just enjoy the abuse of power over women.

If you stop and think.....you'll be able to come up with the names of several people who post here at Care2 who would have CHEERFULLY made the same decision these doctors did.....because they're so miserably tied to their religious concepts that they'd rather kill a healthy adult woman than end the existence of a clump of cells with the potential to become a baby.

"When Mrs Halappanavar begged for a medical termination, she was crisply told that it was against the law and that she was in "a Catholic country". Four days after the baby died, she died of septicaemia."

Ireland? It'll divide the world. The result was utterly predictable. What medical professional could NOT know that three days of labor with a fetus that was not viable would result in septic shock and therefore the death of both mother and child? That goes beyond malpractice, it is malfeasance. Did they not take the same oath other doctors do? FIRST, do no harm? The E Coli was just added insanity as there is no better place to catch it than a hospital, or many other antibiotic resistant infections for that matter. But that isn't what is at issue here. They KNEW what would happen and they allowed it to. They watched her die knowing full well they could save her and did nothing. Are Caesarians against their principles too? And is a single one of those precious bigoted religious principles worth a human life? Not in my book. Not in any book I've ever read. These people are no better than the heathens who drown baby girls at birth, they are cut from the same cloth. And it isn't of human origin, it comes from the darkness that shrouds the soul to allow it commit such abhorrent acts as this. May their God have mercy on their souls, I certainly don't.

*I'm sorry I'm unable to send Gene a green star since I sent one in the past week. Oh, Gene, excellent comment! Truly this is a medical decision to be made by patient and doctor. There is no room for politics or religion in medical matters.

I'm Irish, Catholic, appalled and ashamed.
And that having been said, I am also proud to be a rabid campaigner for NARAL and Planned Parenthood.
And while Ireland will deservedly receive backlash from this, it is because if cases like this, Iwill do whatever I can to make sure that it never happens here...

And yes Pam, I agree with your take on our resident trolls and their misguided version of
Christianity, and I hope they stay under their rocks licking their wounds for as ling as possible...I've enjoyed the reprieve ;)

Really Pam? I can't think of anyone here who would have sacrificed both mother and child, that doesn't make any sense at all. This is the one instance in which abortions are acceptable, and from what I understand Ireland allows them. This was not a fault of the law, but of the doctors involved.

People in Catholic Ireland have been leaving the Church, so I've been told, in DROVES, because of the Pedophile Priest revelations. And the official Vatican coverups.
This arbitrarily-abortion-denying incident, one hopes, will cause MORE Irish Catholics to leave. And not just in Ireland.
There are already many "cafeteria Catholics" who pick and choose and don't go along with what the Hierarchy tells them they should do - for example, in the U.S. nearly all Catholic women who have sex, have used Birth Control at some time.
This approach has its limitations, as shown here. The Hierarchy still retains its POWER over people.
Better, I think, to be consistent, LEAVE the Church entirely, and allow the Church to COLLAPSE for lack of support, especially financial. Let Churches be EMPTY of parishioners; then turned into Museums and Secular Schools and Community Centers, things like that.
People are WAKING UP and it is so tragic that it takes an incident like this, to reach some people... schools and hospitals and such institutions should be totally FREE of religious influences of ANY kind...

Half hour medivac flight to hundreds of OTHER facilities .. a terrible outcome but what was this poor woman .. seemingly in distress and financially solvent doing waiting all this time knocking at THAT door... and who were her aids ..a pack of political morons hoping to change catholic orthodoxy while their friend perished?.. what a crock!

Drop the Catholic church; they are old, white male chauvenistic murderers! Being an aethist is always an option.

If a woman wishes an abortion - that is her decision and hers alone. These moronic anti-abortion laws are man made and need to be dumped NOW otherwise more of the same will continue. An abortion in the first trimester is acceptable - and after that - only on medical advice where the mother's health might be compromised. Thanks Cal.

These doctors should be put in jail for murder. I hope the authorities get involved and take them to court. A woman's life is so much more important than a potential life. More and more I know why I do not want to belong to any religion ever when I hear stories like this.

Ellen, it seems you would like to see only mindless agreeing to everything posted by the so-called progressives on this site, but I'm afraid I just can't comply with your wishes. Not all of us have the same political or religious convictions. Why must those of us who have differing opinions have to keep silent, or be labeled as trolls for exercising our freedom of speech? It's all just opinion after all. Differing opinions should offer a chance to expand your view, not be a bane. And can you really name one person here who would have rejoiced in seeing this woman die, along with her child, when she could have possibly been saved by having an abortion? If a woman's life is truly in danger because of her pregnancy there is no point in seeing both of them die. As far as having no pix or profile yet, I'm lucky to find the time right now to read and comment on the news postings.

What a disgrace! So sick of this type of stories!! Women should be able to decide what they want to do to her bodies!!
