While it's good to hear that "the Sinohydro Corporation has adopted its first ever environmental policy," considering its track record, I agree with the author of this article when he states ""environmental policies are only as good as their implementation on the ground. This will be the next great challenge for Sinohydro."

The world does not need more shoddy Chinese construction projects to ruin the environment.

We do need more energy for our growing population, I do wish that we could find more efficient and less harmful means.

Noted, thanks Cal. I agree with those who do Not think this is good news and we don't need anymore dams of destruction, regardless of which country does the destroying. As to our growing population and energy needs, we don't need any more human consumers of energy or any other resource. This poor world has been literally been Damn'd by humans with intrusive and incredibly destructive demands for energy, water, air and food because we can't control with common sense and logic, our lust for reproduction.

Oh bleeding h**l Harry! How is this good news what with the PRC's environmental record? Even the Three Gorges Dam is an environmental disaster whose days are numbered. They also propose dams on the Mekong and Pearl River deltas which would seriously affect the lives of millions of people. Have you ever wondered why China hangs on so tightly to Tibet? It's not just because of all the heavy minerals; forests and coal. Tibet is the source or headwaters for five of the world's major rivers. Just like General Jap saying that whomever controlled the rice during the Vietnam War would win; so do the Chinese invoke and practice the same principle. Water is the next major commodity to be manipulated for profit.

That's devastating, and what is their motivation, besides profit? Taking water from other places, similar to the way China is buying up land around the world, presumably to protect themselves from climate change problems and food/water shortage problems? Disturbing.

This sounds concerning.

Oh good frickin' grief. It's not enough they've destroyed their country now they want to destroy everyone else's? Pray that the Three Gorges Dam never falls apart and leaks that chemical soup at the bottom of the reservoir. If you think the last environmental spill displeased the Russians wait until this happens; and it will.
