We urgently need both stronger law enforcement and a massive public education program to change the grotesque but common male attitudes that permit violence against women in India.

The death of this poor woman was dreadful but sadly by no means unique. I have helped out at a centre run by Mother Teresa (now Blessed Teresa of Calcuta) where I met several women who had been attacked and raped, they all had suffered dreadfully. India is a wonderful country but is one where a change of attitude, in numerous respects, is overdue - this will not be brought about by condemnation but by offering the hand of friendship and support.

Waht's amazing is how many women are enchanted by India even though it has one of the worst reputations for human rights abuses

Isn't it sinful, that we have to beg governments to treat people with humanity?

Signed and noted. It seems there is now a real possibility for India's making headway against violence and other oppression toward women. I hope this may cause other countries, including the U.S., to examine their treatment of women.
