Like so many other "crises" imposed on us lately, there is a lot to the Post Office privatization story that you are not being told.

The Repugnant Party has done much to destroy the Post Office to achieve their aims of degrading the non-rich's needs to communicate. It is consistent with their actions of busting unions, fighting education, destroying local government, encouraging outsourcing of government responsibilities. Paranoid - no, I've just done my research. Look up conservative think tanks and Koch brothers on Google some day. You'll be educated.

I am outraged - so many lies, so much manipulation and they keep getting away with it all. People *think* they don't care, they don't need the post office, etc. but when mail is privatized and costs a small fortune, we will miss what we have....

Just another sleazy method of "shrinking" the government! I'm glad I'm old and probably will die before I see this country totally self destruct!

I am so disgusted!
And the mention of "hostage taking" is something I'm sure they'l finf a way to work into here as well..what do they want to trade for the USPS-Obamacare?

AUGH I never knew that stuff!
I always wondered why they wouldn't raise the cost of postage significantly faster... now i know. =(

I've been outraged for some time. So has Jerry Stidman, who has a number of petitions on SIgnOn regarding this - one is at but there are others, some written function by function and some state by state. I think I have signed most of them (including for states not mine). Please join me.

I've received many petitions to save the post office and have signed them all and sent letters as well. Just more proof the GOP is systematically trying to destroy the gov't in favor of corporate privatization...a.k.a. fascism.
I've also read suggestions that the postal service should be in charge of the internet and its protection...not sure what I think about that, though, without more specifics. It is an interesting and innovative idea, though.

The Republibaggers will stop at nothing to destroy all their competition, ie: Unions. We need to do all we can to stop them, get them out of our governments, and save our Postal Services, as well as the other services they are out to destroy. The Republibaggers are a cancer on our society and need to be dug out and destroyed.

Privatization is never a good thing and the US government and congress seems to be bent on privatizating everything.

One of the key requirements for flourishing online businesses is a reliable postal service. You can't make money selling individual widgets online if you have to pay Fedex to deliver them. An expensive, limited-service privatised post would kill off any number of small enterprises - another strike against an already sick economy.

Outraged?--Trust me, I am, and have been for a while now.

Privatizing is never a good idea. And as Anthony H. said, small business would lose out big time.

When UPS or FedEx wants to raise rates they just do it.
When the USPS wants to raise rates.....both UPS and FedEx gets to testify on how much the rates should be raised.

The Australian Mail Service is profitable, thriving, popular, reliable. My local Office in a small rural town, similar in size to one where I stayed in Texas recently, has quite different ambience. Texas. (Population, 6,000)One person at the counter.
Lovely building devoid of anything except to accept and deliver mail. Each time I visited I was the ONLY customer.

Stanthorpe, Queensland, AUSTRALIA. (pop 6,000) Usually three serving at the counter, at most times there is a line up of customers. The aisles are stacked with other goods and services mostly related to mail or communications but not solely. Passport photos, computer inks, packaging, et'c. Mail delivery Australia wide is guaranteed, between Capital cities, 24 hours, in a country that is as large as the original 48 American States.

The only similarity that I could see between Texas and here was in the personnel. Both smiling, courteous, willing to help and pleasant.

Ray, Rep Peter DeFazio (D, OR) has introduced HR 630 which would satisfy my wishes, and those of most others who don't want to lose the USPS. He will need co-sponsors, as many and as visible as possible. You could help by calling your representative and asking him or her to co-sponsor HR 630, and to help it through the committee process to get to the floor.

Also, if anyone who cares about the USPS sends a physical card or letter to
Post Office Box 5041
Terre Haute, IN 47805
it will help with providing a mountain of evidence that people do care.

My first post mentioned Jarry Stidman, and I have sence received a new list of all the USPS petitions he has started:
Save Our Post Office

Save Our Post Office-Indiana

Save Our Post Office-Terre Haute, IN

Save Our Post Office-Rochester, MN

Save Our Post Office-Lancaster, PA

Save Our Post Office Michigan

Save Our Post Office Utah

Save Our Post Office 6 Day Delivery

Save Our Post Office California

And, finally, here is a Facebook page with full information (I am not on Facebook so I haven't checked it, but I understand it has more information than just that about USPS):

The answer here is simple... hold the Republicans accountable. The media could certainly help with this, but it shouldn't be left up to them. Just keep pointing out to anyone and everyone who will listen just how out of touch with the mainstream the Republican party has become.

And remember to vote when the time comes. It worked this past November and it will work again.

The further the Republicans move to the right, the more people they will piss off. Just work to ensure that they get the blame they deserve for the lack of progress these past 12+ years.
