Is Obama's Aid to Syrian Rebels Too Little, Too Late?

For the first time, the U.S. is sending aid directly to the opposition. But the money is for food and medicine -- not weapons

This is aid that should have come to Syria ages ago. Because Obama is an unspoken supporter of Assad, the rebels will never get the military support they need.

I have never read anywhere that President Obama is a supporter of Assad, and referring to him as an "unspoken" supporter sounds like an assumption. With Iran, Russia and China backing Assad, getting involved in a war with Syria could be a long, drawn-out affair.

I agree with this assessment from the Los Angeles Times: "There is no guarantee that arming the Free Syrian Army would significantly hasten Assad's overthrow, and there remains the possibility that weapons provided to trusted groups would find their way to the radical Islamist fighters who constitute a second front in the opposition to Assad. And while arming the rebels wouldn't lead ineluctably to the use of U.S. air power or the sending of American troops, a military alliance with the rebels would make escalation likelier."

We will be putting more weapons into the hands of AQ, MB and other Islamists. Not a good move.

Obama is helping turn the whole Middle East Islamist, which is very much not in our interests.

we shouldn't be giving arms to anybody over there. the rebels aren't any better than assad. most of them are worse. they are terrorists. we need to stay out and let the people of syria handle it. if anybody steps in it should be the arab league. they are muslim and only muslims need to help muslims. the only thing we get from muslims is grief. keep out of it. get us out of the whole region.

Thanks, but the Syrian people needed help many years ago, and still need it!

Must admit that it was a surprise for the Weekly Standard to not be all foaming at the mouth attacks on Obama/Kerry, it is after all the Neocon bible, founded and edited by William Kristol and owned by Murdoch/News Corp. First FYI the Syrian Revolution/Civil War will not be two years old until April, 2013. Second, considering that no one be they Arabic, Muslim or Western is even sure of just which groups are part of the anti-Assad forces arms shipment would more stupid than say the Repug Neocon training, funding and arming of Al Qaeda or their helping Saddam and the Bath Party into power in Iraq and then propping him up for years. There is also the very real possibility that US Arms Aid to the Anti-Assad forces would be used to justify Assad using bio-chemical weapons. That would result in massive in-discriminant civilian deaths on a scale to horrific to imagine.
