Boy Scouts of America Proposes Dropping Ban on Gay Kids--But Not Gay Adults

The Boy Scouts of America announced that it intends to end its ban on gay members, as long as its board approves the change. The organization would still, however, prohibit gay adults from serving as troop leaders or volunteers.

This seems like a good compromise, but it shouldn't really matter if the adults are gay or not so long as they are not pedaphiles!

Doesn't all of this go back to once dearly held belief that all gay men must also be pedophiles? Stupid policy gets stupid results.

Kit - has it right! There is no excuse to bar any for their sexual identity, there are in all likelihood more pedophiles that are straight! This organization seems to have a deeply rooted homophobia to contend with, and I wouldn't want my children associated with it until they become less "radical" and less biased!

Well, they Boy Scouts of America are half right. I don't agree with them banning gay adults. They are making a huge mistake in doing this.

I am good with this. I don't think the boys need to know the sexual orientation of their leaders -- gay or straight. Just lead and leave your personal love life out of it.

Thanks Cal for the link to the article by Kate Sheppard. The BSA just can't seem to get it right. Kit is right on target. Read and noted.

Boy Scouts of America is a private organization - they can have whatever rules they want. If you want different rules, you can form your own organization. No one is being forced to participate.

Think of the organizations you belong to - how would you like it if nonmembers forced you to change what you were doing? Boycott them if you don't like their policies. When organizations do not keep up with social changes, they die out.

I hate to tell them this, but children grow up into... ADULTS!

And Sara V, if it were so simple that it is a private organization... but it uses public schools to have the meetings and recruits by having the literature handed out via the teachers to the children. That is essentially making it sanctioned & promoted by the governments; and then there are the many companies who support them via donations (often deducted from paychecks of the workers) such as United Way among many more.

There was one mother who took the Boy Scouts to task because they insist the boys also pledge to "God" and her child received horrendous death threats, via post, email, phone, in person, from so-called "God-Fearing Hetero-Sexual" Adults who felt it was their obligations to force him to believe (or completely take him out of this world).

The BSA is not a private organization it is under the massive umbrella of the United Way Fund and all decisions must be approved by the United Way.

My son was in BSA, he became an Eagle Scout and though most of the Scout Masters were married men with children, there were a few boys that might have been gay, who knows or cares. Two of the Scout Masters were gay, even when I learned this, I had to consider first does this affect his ability to be a Scout Master, the answer was conclusively no. This is just one more group to become the focus of hate based entirely on emotion and not the facts of who these men are.

It is not about all gay men being pedophiles. All straight men aren't pedophiles either but they would not want a straight man running a Girl Scout troop and taking the girls on camping trips etc. They just don't want to take the chance.

I don't agree, sexual identity shouldn't keep someone from helping others!

If the truth were known, there are plenty of adults alive and well in the scouts and no doubt from the very beginning.

It sounds like a good compromise. The BSA has every right to run the organization as they see fit and stay true to their values.

I've noticed over the years, that MANY heterasexual people seem to connect the words, HOMOSEXUAL and PEADOPHILE. I'd like to know why this is. Research has PROVEN that Paedophilia is MUCH more prominent in HETERASEXUAL people. Whether the leaders are gay or straight, men or women, they should all have a background check to make sure they're safe to work with children and they should be given a "Working With Children" photo I.D. card!

After reading some of the homophobic comments on Mother Jones, I had to comment.
My daughter is a lesbian and she is in a very happy and committed relationship with a lovely woman.
They are raising a boy and a girl and they are a wonderful family unit.
Some of their friends are gay and one is a transgender woman. All these people are functional human beings, not the sex crazed child predators that some of these idiots seem here seem to believe.
Gays are no more harmful to children than straights and some you need to get your heads out of your arses and have a look around. Or maybe listen to the wonderful speech given by a New Zealand politician when they passed the marriage equality bill.
In short, all you homophobes needs to grow up.
This is the comment I wanted to post on Mother Jones but I was not able to. If you read some of the comments there, they will turn your stomach. It seems that homophobia is alive and well.

Personally, I oppose the new proposal that the Boy Scouts of America should revoke the longstanding policy on homosexuality. An organization that teaches character, courage, and conviction shouldn't be exploited as a laboratory for sexualized political correctness. For decades, the BSA has kept the interest of the boys it serves as the focus of all its actions. No matter what, the Boy Scouts of America could be counted upon to do the right thing and not yield to any social or corporate pressure, and has thus far stood strong.

Parents should be able to entrust their sons to the organization with the confidence that they will not be exposed to inappropriate sexual topics such as homosexuality. The BSA should retain the current long-held and time-tested policy regarding homosexual leadership and membership.
