'Tipping Point': Dredging the Elbe Poses Severe Ecological Risk

A Dutch study could put a stop to an already controversial project to deepen the Elbe River, SPIEGEL has learned. It warns that if dredging continues, damage to the river's ecosystem would likely be irreparable.

I find it interesting that this river has been dredged in the past and no one seemed to have problems with it. If, indeed, it is a huge ecological problem, then another way must be found or the project abandoned. I will be interested to see what the outcome is.

I always thought of dredging as cleaning what is there and deepening, as well, making bigger that what was there. I can imagine how it would impact the wildlife.
