Tens of thousands of people remain homeless. Housing, business, tourism and coastal protection all remain major issues with the summer vacation -- and hurricane -- seasons almost here again.

This comes on top of the news that there will be further cuts to the victims of Sandy due to the sequester, at the same time - certain contractors have taken advantage of the victims upping prices for shoddy work - there has been a lot passed down to good labor from the mentors of the rich in America - How to be opportunistic - I believe our banks have taught us a great deal! I'm bitter - I know victims - who are victims of the opportunists!

I don't understand the insurance process at all. It seems to be taking forever.... My heart goes out to all the people hurt in any way by Hurricane Sandy.

My best friend had to split up her family and everyone go where they could. They JUST got an apartment finally. But they lost everything. Still, they are grateful they have each other and their dog. Before they got the apartment, they were living in a tiny motel...4 of them and their dog. Their home is only now beginning to be rebuilt. Sad. :-(

Shared and noted Cal. One has to wonder if verbally bashing the president solves the problem. Just sayin'.

Waiting to find out if you have to build the house 3 or 5 foot higher? What's your life worth?

And all the money is going into replacing boardwalks and other structures abusive to the dunes and barrier islands.

This is the perfect set up for developers who want to build huge hotels and resorts on that property - they wait til people are sick of the mess and then buy up the land for much less than they would normally pay. Don't bash the President, bash the greedy developers and the insurance companies.

Noted and Article Read With Great Interest - also thank you for the pictures Cal.
This is such a tragedy, and in my opinion is taking far too long to get people back into some kind of housing to enable them to keep their families together. There are a lot of heroes and wonderful volunteers, but some of them also need help. In reality reporting just stops and only occasionally we might hear a bit. Devastation like this has to be kept front and center to get things done. As far as the gouging and shoddy work taking place, the same happened in Katrina, and somehow it has to be stopped. I just wonder how many people affected by this Storm and other tragic happenings are now living in poverty - no jobs, no homes, no transportation! And the rich just keep on getting richer with no caring for others - waiting to prey on them. Sad, sad situation in such a great country.

Real sad and shocking. Unless you live in Louisiana where a heck of a lot of people are STILL homeless, hungry etc. after Katrina & Rita hit us. Its only shocking about NY &N NJ because it's "new" give it a little while and everyone will stop caring!!

How about just moving out of the NJ-NY-CT-MA crotch? Leave those defective states and their liberal scam artist governments behind and rebuild communities in areas and states less threatened by serious weather and treasonous liberal politicians?

To follow up on the comment by Stuart Thomas, it's time we spent more money on making our own country's people healthy and happy and less money on making other countries' peoples unhealthy and unhappy!

Fred Krohn- I lived in Cleveland (tornado) Louisiana (hurricane) Oregon (wild fire) and now California( earthquakes).
Also lived in Detroit (riots)
Chances are higher for things to happen in those areas, but sometimes that's where the jobs are (oilfield) for father and husband.
anything can take you out- iceburg, plane crash, hit by a kid on a skateboard...
the fact is, we rebuild countries we invade, yet hesitate to even go into our own country and rebuild. Maybe like in "the mouse that roared" the hard hit areas should declare war on the rest to the U.S and get aid!?

Nothing will be done by the Government,,, If local people rebuild in N.Y. and N.J. the Government will take
the credit.

As fun as it is I wouldn't live that close to water unless I was so wealthy it didn't matter if the house disappeared.

the effects of sandy have largely disappeared from the headlines, but the sea levels are still rising and global temperatures continue to heat up. apparently, the lessons of sandy were not learned. unfortunately, we can look forward to more extreme weather to come. sooner or later, the politicians will wake up and start taking global warming seriously.
