Palm Oil's Forgotten Victims: Sumatran Elephants Suffer in Rush for 'Liquid Ivory'

Cal

Western consumers are inadvertently driving the Sumatran elephant to extinction by eating, washing and wearing - in cosmetics - the derivatives of a fruit that is destroying the animal's last remaining forest habitat.

This was a very well written, sad article about the devastation brought upon elephants (and other animals) affected by the palm industry.
I'm very disturbed by the numerous articles I read regarding animal abuses. I'm beginning to understand the word 'hate' when it comes to humans destroying the wildlife and the earth itself. It's saddening and maddening.

Another tragic tale where life weighs nothing against a pocketful of dollars.
These people are ruining their own tomorrows and yet they don't want to hear the warnings and they just carry on regardless, not caring that they're killing in the process.

This is unbelievable, companies should stop abusing this and set out standard procedures and protocol that will protect the animals and supply the public. It about time these companies stop hiding behind their logo and make a stand and stop this abuse. we all have to live on this world, not just humans. I can see a world of famine, drought in 50 years time as people are too stupid not to do anything

The human population reached seven billion! Elephants, orangutans, tigers, rhinos and many other animals are near extinction. Why we don’t care?
There are still ways to stop conflict between man and wildlife. For example, EU has adopted a new law that will require the labelling of specific vegetable oils on food products, so palm oil will no longer be a hidden ingredient.

Thank you Cal!

One of the dirty little secrets of the food and cosmetics industry. Unfortunately for anyone who is trying to avoid it, Palm oil is often disguised as many different ingredient names; for example, names with palmitate at the end are usually derived from palm oil. This link is for a list of the names used for palm oil, and also companies and their products that use it.

I read the entire article. How do we stop this atrocity? Not only are these beautiful creatures losing their homes but to kill a 400 year old tree is equally heartbreaking.
We need a major petition to send to the Governor of Sumatra to let him know that we're not only against this massive killing of both the animals and forest but what it is doing to their country. Have they never heard of Easter Island?

Poor elephants,,,,,,they cannot catch a break.. Everytime something was taken from them,,,,,they moved on ,,,only to find they must move again.....I see this as a failure on the part of the people in charge....as is the case everywhere in the world when there is no conscience and no respect for the animals....perhaps they have none for themselves......

People are unaware of this I think. I wish there was a way to really get the word out. People know about the ivory trade and it's impact on elephants but they don't equate palm oil with the destruction of elephants in the same way. The said thing is that these villagers will still live in poverty and the elephants will suffer and die. The only ones not suffering are the 1% who will make even more $money$ off of the misery of both.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

The solution would seem to be with us, the consumers. Do NOT buy any product which contains palm oil or palm oil products. There are alternatives. We need to alleviate the demand for it NOW while we still have some elephants left.

There is a certain man who occupy this earth, who have destroyed every place he have visited. These men can careless men when it comes to getting what they want. They are not above killing or stealing that in which they want. They kill man as well as animals and the Seth only those of us who stops and smell the flowers and take a look at how everything that was made unearth underearth in the waters under the waters all was made to intermingle with men even the plants are related to mankind. Hump it sounds funny coming man kind man is the most destructive of all God 's creation and it always motivated by money and power which neither can give them what they are looking for and that thing can not be given or bought.
