If residents of Wanblee, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, want to vote in the courthouse in Kadoka, they must make a 50-plus-mile round trip via this South Dakota Badlands highway. Access to voting has been a continual issue for tribal members arou

Here's a somewhat related petition. It asks that the U.S admit to the genocide committed against the original Americans:

What the Congress needs to do is to create twelve thousand "preclearence" jurisdictions. In other words every town, city, county and state in the US with a minority population of greater than 5% or 100 individuals.

I'd like to remind you that the Lakota are among the very poorest people in the US, and that it is well-said that SD is practically the most racist state in the USA.

Montana and South Dakota have sever problems with such denial of the right to vote of their indigenous people now on reservations.

Wanblee means Eagle.

Check Patrick's comment above and please go to the site he mentions to sign the petition. This, if enough signers get aboard, can help to restore and improve the rights and concerns of Native Americans.

Shared. So much for this land is your land. It's just for the wealthy and corporations to screw up.

I didn't realize those that lived on reservations could vote, aren't they considered like little countries?

Noted and here we are in the 21st century. Then they wonder why we're not allowed out of our solar system.

Theodore, how right you are.

Earth is in quarantine until she becomes civilized.

Even then it's doubtful that the Intergalactic Confederacy will grant
us a place. Nor should they.

Arielle is misguided if she thinks this is favorable for the Lakota people of SD.

" State senator Jim Bradford (D-District 27/Pine Ridge), who is Oglala, expressed regret over the decision. South Dakota has a long history of disenfranchising and discriminating against Native people; the state and jurisdictions within it have fought and either lost or settled some 20 voting-rights cases."

With few exceptions, the Government, in all its faces, have screwed Native Americans from the first day they trusted ue. Reparation still withheld, sad.

This is just one more nail in their coffins - donations anyone?? I have some nice big ones that'll hold for a good many centuries...

The "trail of tears" NEVER ENDS! Most people are ignorant of the brutal murder of the Native Americans by the "puritans" and America still honors this horrific act by celebrating thanksgiving! Get the irony? All non Native Americans are here in a new land at the destruction of native people and their cultures so hey why not their votes? They way the GOP losers are going the only people who can vote are going to be WHITE ANGLO SAXON MEN. Look what the GOP did to acorn, the new redistricting of blue areas and voter I.D. laws. I stand my ground when it comes to voting RIGHTS! The B.S. the GOP is feeding the masses regarding voter fraud is just that BULLSHIT! The ultimate irony is that the USA wants to force feed other countries with democracy and yet here in America the democracy bus got pushed over the cliff. Truly sad.

It would be only right for the original inhabitants to set the requirements for voting in those counties. Then they could put one ballot box for the entire non-Indian voters on each reservation and make the whites stand in line for 24 hours to vote. It would be quite fitting to do so.

Amazing that this type of thing is allowed against people who have the same right to vote as any of us do. The GOP and those who vote for them are causing such untold misery to the people who were here before any of the rest of us. Will sign the petition for any good it may do.
