Each year, in El Hawamdia and other impoverished rural communities across Egypt, thousands of girls between the ages of 11 and 18 are sold by their parents to wealthy, much older Gulf Arab men under the pretext of marriage. The sham nuptials may last from

When the figurehead of your religion ''marries'' a nine-year-old girl, it sets a nice precedent for pedophilia, doesn't it?

My mother told me about this problem when I was young. It's been going on for years and should be stopped.

Arab society and culture has become a mass of contradictions, and outright stupidity. To actually say:"It's in the best interest of the girls and the family at large." is such an incredible statement. how does one begin to debate this?

Laws are needed to these underage girls from being exploited.

As long as women are considered nothing, things like this will happen. You can see the start in this country, with taking away women's rights.

You can justify just about anything in the name of religion too. A reduction in certain portions of the human populace might just be what is necessary; sad to say.

The child is reduced to an exploitable commodity... how does an outside culture combat a practice ingrained in a millenia of religion? The pedophiles and the males who sell these children are beneath contempt. There are in this world some practices even a tolerant person cannot accept in the name of religion.

Outrageous. What kind of parent would ever be willing to sell their own child? My heart goes out to those poor children.

These "temporary marriages", also known as Islamically-sanctioned prostitution, where the fathers are the pimps, go on large scale in both Sunni and Shia Muslim countries.

As despicable as it is, it goes on because Islam allows it, and because Islam is dominated by men and caters to almost every lust possible.

If people only knew what else goes on.... Married men with four wives are also entitled to sex slaves. Muhammad did it, so it's okay.

One of the most grotesque ideologies in the world.

A sad situation. And how hypocritical - to find a loophole that allows child prostitution to be called marriage. Garbage by any other name still smells as bad.

But, of course, the victims are mere females after all....

The “dowry” that Gulf Arab men are prepared to pay for sex with young girls is a powerful magnet for impoverished Egyptian families in a country where a quarter of the population subsists on less than two dollars a day.
We see the same all over the world, when people try to live on very low pay. We need to look at why more than just saying this is bad, can you think of living every day on less then you will pay for a beer tonight, or the fact that the PC/Laptop you used to post on here cost the same as a lifetime of pay in a poor part of the world.
Yes this need to be stopped and fast.

I do not believe this is an "arab , religious or cultural" thing. It goes on in every country where the extremely poor are exploited. A big tourist trade to the far eastern countries has sprung up .... western men hollidaying for sex with young children.British men can now be tried in British courts for these offences committed abroad. It is happening in your own country , parents doing the very same thing, passing their children around for money ,drugs, whatever only they don't dress it up as "marriage".It is very easy to see the "wrongs" in other cultures and countries and throw stones but the same thing is happening very near to home. BLAME THE DIRTY PEDOPHILES .... lock them up for ever.

Disgusting, despicable and when will they value females? Their country could come out of the dark ages if they had equality for all.

Having a vagina and ovaries is obviously a curse in these fabulous bitchin parts of the world. I would love to see a miracle where they could not longer have female children and only had males. Maybe that would correct some of the stigma associated with being a female.

This type of activity will stop only when women and sympathetic Muslim men stand up against the devaluing of women in their society. Children are not commodities to be traded for a better way of life, they are the continuation of your family line into the future. Poor Poor girls. Still waiting for "Asalum Alaikum" to have TRUE meaning for every individual of Islamic faith.
