A case study from Kenya --according to a new report published by the Kenyan Ministry of Health, one change could go a long way toward reducing stress on a hugely overburdened system: allowing more women to have an abortion.

Thanks, Cal. As a retired case manager who specialized in fertility issues for years I can assure these same principles apply to every country. If abortion is illegal it will only cause "backstreet abortions" regardless of what country you live in, which in turn will lead to higher health care costs.
I am not an advocate for abortion, but, abortions preformed in secret are more libel to be unsafe, unsterile and cause irreparable damage to women seeking them. Noted, signed & shared.

Abortions should be available. It is a survival tool.

I should also amend my last comment - to add the fact that abortion is a seriously difficult decision to make and never to be taken lightly, but in my youth I personally new of two girls who tried "back alley" - one seriously maimed for life, without possibility of giving birth and the other died. I also knew of one who "went away" for 3 months - came back deeply depressed surrendering her child to adoption and greeted with shame at school - there are reasons for abortion rights to exist - an old argument that because of these reasons and several others was resolved with the decision of Roe v. Wade we cannot go back!

Ireland finally came out of the Dark Ages by allowing abortion to save the life of the mother. I say a bouquet of
dried thistles to the (expletive deleted) airheads who did not perform an abortion in late 2012 on the 31-yr old
dentist from India who died because of such extreme ignorance. Her other little children were left motherless.

Thanks for posting this important info, Cal. Everyone should be aware of these facts. By cutting access to safe abortion, and closing these clinics, many more dollars will be spent to medically care for those harmed by botched abortions. "Underground" clinics will pop up, just like in the old days....prior to Roe v. Wade. Of course, the wealthy will always be able to afford to fly to another country, or find a doctor they can pay for their "private, hospital" abortions.

If abortion complications cost so much there as there are so many then its false economy not letting them have safe abortions but then when did politicians make sensible laws not too often!

This action, underground abortions which we had tried to stop years ago, will be back and the back streets/alleys will be busy, busy, busy. The hospitals will be extremely busy with abortion results again as they try to save the lives the abortionists are taking. This is just a mandate for back alley murders.

Those who want to have an abortion will find a way. This not only puts the mother in danger, but also anyone who tries to help her. Abortions must be legal and safe, always.

And then there was light!!! Abortion is a woman's decision! This is extremely personal. Politics, religion and all the protesters that gather around clinics need to get the f!!k out of women's lives! Finally, in KENYA, they were able to see the whole picture. The U.S. needs to take a serious lesson. I applaud Kenya and their insights!

And do the so-called right-to-lifers give a rat's derriere? NO! They care about life only when it is in the womb - or serving as the Religious Reich's stooges.

Republicans could care less about the babies born because they disagree with abortion. It's only a political ploy. If they cared, perhaps they would adopt children in orphanages. All they care about is money and those who have it. By the way, don't tell ME they wouldn't have abortions in their own families if one was called for.

noted.Although I am against abortion I don't try to control other people's lives. I believe a child is a gift from God, but having said that there are circumstances in which I feel abortion is necessary, in a case of rape, a minor child subjected to molestation or if there are serious health risks either to the mother or infant. And in these cases I do feel that it should be legal, to stop these women from having back alley abortions and risking their lives due to unsanitary conditions etc. But to use the medical system as a method of birth control is no reason. Sorry

Thank you, Cal, for this very important article. I'm sure that the findings will hold for other countries too (including the US) where people have little education on birth control, simply can't afford it, or where men simply refuse to use a condom to avoid pregnancy, or spreading HIV or other diseases. With their disregard for the women's predicament, these men have much in common with pro-lifers. This article won't change their minds on legal abortion because they couldn't give a toss about these women in the first place, only about their 'god-given-right' to force their beliefs on others.

B. Lewenza,

I applaud your convictions and your understanding that there are times when abortion should be safe and legal. Two (2) things, who are you to decide when an abortion is "justified" and secondarily, no one wishes to choose an abortion, it is often a painfully charged and emotional decision best left to the woman and her Dr.. To say "using the system as a form of birth control" is ridiculous! IF right wingers afforded women and MEN the right to appropriate medically available and often EXPENSIVE birth control and sex education instruction, the need for abortion would diminish exponentially.....

So very true, important things to know. The right wing believe in limiting choice and make things dangerous for women.
