Noted. Thanks, Cal. Congress should be absolutely ashamed with itself. While our "fearless leaders" are co-opted by Wall St & corporations, they are turning a blind eye to their own constituents. America's falling apart from the inside out as our students test well below students from many other countries...(maybe they'll start to notice that homeless students have other things on their mind besides academics).....but let's keep funding the despicable war machine & illegal surveillance. Heavy sigh!!!

Where are the Congressional voices from those states mentioned? The administration is well aware of these stats as well, and none of this American tragedy has ever been brought to light.

That's really frightening and discouraging. Student debt and inflation are among the biggest culprits and as usual Congress remains silent. Thanks Cal.

I for one hang my head in shame that we have such greedy, sadistic politicians, corporations, ppl here in the USA. People need to come out with the pitch fork and torches once and for all. Stop this utter nonsense and stop voting in the same a holes.

Shame on the media for not making an issue out of this. Seems the long term unemployed have been pushed in front of the oncoming bus too.

Our schools here in Florida have so many homeless that they have ready a special form when people register their children just for those who are homeless. Homelessness IS under-reported as many live on family or friends sofa's, garages, in tents in people's yards and are too embarrassed to report it.

Embarrassed for if you do listen to those on the news talk or read a paper lying around it makes it appear that if you can't find a full time job you are a failure for not being able to find a living wage job that will also pay the rent and keep the lights on. Others are afraid their children will be taken away from them, so they hide this fact in their life.

I live in Florida, and I know there is a big need for affordable housing yet the list for one of those places was closed back in 2009 and no names are allowed to be placed onto the list. The shelters are always full and the homeless are sent away, so they go into the woods, which in Florida isn't always the safest with snake and poisonous spiders not to mention gators.

This is seldom as others have said, spoken about on the news, it should be nightly reported, showing what a National Tragedy this is and well as a disgrace to a Country that toots it horn all the time about how wonderful it is, how rich it is, and how we can spend more money on war today than we ever have.

As the economy has tanked, the banks have been bailed out, and America lost its jobs, the defense budget continues to grow.

For the past 13 years U.S. military spending has increased 114 percent. That's 8 percent higher than at the height of Reagan's presidency and the Cold War.

With the Corporations and the top tier of income brackets paying less in taxes from little to zero at the same time our military spending is increasing, then we wonder why we can't help the homeless, fund the WIC and the Food Stamp programs. Why isn't the media pounding away on that one?

Where are all the anti-abortion people. They should financially help all the suffering students and parents. Sadly noted.

Homeless & hungry children can not do well in school. It's hard to think when so stressed. If The House would pass the Jobs Bill, that would help. & They could pass the bill to raise the min. wage !!! ...But...Not much is going to "go anywhere" until the Teabaggers GO !!! & the other RWNJs.....the Haters.

Words truly fail, me when I not only read of the horrendous increase in homeless students. Living in Los Angeles, Ca. I see it all the time. I could go on ad nauseum et infinitum. But until the media STOPS ignoring this truly grave situation and puts children's FACES to this issue and not be represented by numbers it will continue. We are going back to the days of Charles Dicken's days and Oliver Twist times! Yet sociopaths like the Koch brothers, the Walton's and even the idiot newtie gingRICH saying things like making students janitors at the school they attend I have to remind myself that I am living in the 21st century because it is starting to look like the 1800 hundreds! The Koch brothers, the Walton's and many other wrong wing nuts spend billions on buying elections and our political whores, but help those in need oh hell no!

Wow, I just read the comments on the CNN site where this article was from. Major anti-Obama vitriol. This wasn't even a Faux Newz site. Obama's responsible for this?! Now you know how Teapublicans get elected - hate-spewing know-nothings who can't offer one semi-coherent solution.

I think a big problem could be fear of CPS / DCFS. They would take your kid in the US for being poor. Right now the holes in that system are outweighing the good workers of CPS. The US gov't isn't there to help their people, they proved that on many occasions including hurricane Katrina and how that was dealt with. Maybe I am wrong, I don't live there.
