Nelson Mandela was an inspiration to all those who seek freedom from tyranny and is a great loss to his nation and the world at large. In my home town the main library is named after him and also a street.

A huge loss for South Africa and for the world.

Hamba Kahle, Tata Madiba.

Our world is a better place for having had a Nelson Mandela, and we in South Africa are that bit better. How wonderful if his successors were to emulate him and if we were to value the great gift of freedom he won for us at the price of so much suffering.

We thank God for you, Madiba. May you rest in peace and rise in glory.

My five favorite Nelson Mandela quotes are:

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”

“There is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”

"Difficulties break some men but make others. No axe is sharp enough to cut the soul of a sinner who keeps on trying, one armed with the hope that he will rise even in the end."

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

“I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death.”

Mandela was a bright light that passed through our world, leaving a permanent warm glow to light our way forward. He set a high standard and I wish him well on his continuing journey.

He was a great and living example that forgiveness isn't a sign of weakness but something that can lead to a better world.

Not many of us would be able to forgive like he did.

But we should try.
