Yes, but not TOO fast. Like it or not, we can't switch to renewables - wind, solar, geothermal, wave energy, biofuels, fat people on treadmills (ha ha, just kidding) - overnight. We do have to wean ourselves off "dead dinosaurs" as quickly as is feasible, and I wish that we could do that quickly enough to confuse a hummingbird. However, we must be practical, and make sure that we can replace each coal plant with equivalent renewable. Also, clean energy is still a work in progress: Look at the problems we have with solar plants and wind turbines killing birds.

Amen to that. If the coal, oil and gas backers would just put their money into sustainables, we could switch in less than a year. And look at how many jobs THAT would create!

Big Coal is as dirty as #dirtyenergy gets. It's not only accelerating climate change; it's also responsible for the death of 1.2 million people every year from the particulate pollution that coal generates. Just say no to #dirtycoal.

I'm with Freya! Leaping into the environmental FRAY without solid, adequate technologies behind us is only going to cause MORE troubles.

If coal is clearly declining and outdated, I don't think straight-up regulations are the way to go. Investors want their companies to switch off of it because it is no longer profitable, given the opportunity-costs. However, they just don't have the money to quickly retool plants. If the government were to make loans available with low enough rates that companies would still profit from getting off coal, then I am confident that they will do their best to line their pockets, and cut pollution massively.

Coal is a dirty polluting fuel you would think that in this day and age and technological advances that a solution would have been found by now.

C02 concentrations are already past 400ppm. Coal and other fossil fuels need to be phased out a rapidly as possible.

Companies don' care how they generate electricity, but as they found out in the UK, consumers will not pay extra for green energy. Anyway, as we are expected to be entering an ice age, perhaps CO2 is not the issue we thought it to be.

unfortunately, nat gas is not perfect either......needs to accelerate wind, solar, wave, tidal, thermal, geothermal, etc....

Natural gas is every bit as dirty as coal, not in the burning, but in the extraction.

Even though it is an election year, tougher regulations on coal are needed. The proposed reg is there for Particulate Matter... it's time to phase it in.
