As Kyiv fights back against pro-Russian separatists, a civil war now looms--just as Putin had planned

You just noticed? But the statement "Before the current crisis in Ukraine, separatism barely existed there as a political movement. The spark that ignited it came from Moscow. Following a protest movement that toppled the pro-Russian Ukrainian president" is just malarkey. Plus your pro-russian Viktor Yanukovych won what was hailed as fair elections. Plus, the Russians have just pulled there forces back.

Ukraine has been under Russia for 300 years. It is doubtful that the Ukrainians have forgotten the famine imposed by Stalin in order to force collectivisation in the Ukraine. It was probably one of the biggest holocausts in history. For that reason alone, there will be a lot of historical resentment fuelling this conflict. One of the problems will be that in the past 300 years there has been a lot of intermarriage and most people were educated in Russian speaking schools with Russian music and Russian literature and so forth. There will be a lot of split loyalty too. It could get very messy.

The following from the article is critical to understanding this conflict:

"An April poll of residents in southern and eastern Ukraine by the Ukrainian newspaper Dzerkalo Tyzhnia revealed that few living there want to join Russia, and most oppose the militants taking over their towns and cities."

I support whatever the majority of Ukrainians want. I do not support the fractioning of Ukraine. The Western nations are supporting democracy, while Russia is seeking once again to expand an empire. Currently, it is Russian security forces in the Ukraine orchestrating events and causing provocations, not Western ones. If civil war does erupt, the blood will be on Russia's hands.
