About eleven million tons of food is wasted in the United Kingdom each year, and only six percent of the 7.2 million tonnes of food is recycled. In other countries in places like Africa, South America, and Asia, there is not enough food to eat, let alone

It is important to separate good food that is wasted, often fruit and vegetables that are the wrong shape or not an even colour and waste food, that is food left on plates etc in restaurants. There is no excuse to waste good food, it happens far too often, in fact we could all reduce waste food, by not ordering such large portions when we eat our for instance.

Interesting thing is that over 30 years ago there was a program on TV in UK showing a revolutionary recycling plant. Everything was sorted and used, nothing wasted. It was scrapped as being 'uneconomical'. How economic is a planet swamped in rubbish?

Recyclable food? Everything that can be recycled should be, It's sickening when i see recyclable items in the trash. some countries now fine people for putting recyclables in the trash.

You say as garbage?? Yes thought you did, well we in Canada throw out more food than I have ever seen. If a tomato has a bruises on it, rather than cut it off we would throw it away. . Out of site out mind! My husband &I never throw anything in the garbage,we have composing system, all goes in the garden. So we use it in there & basically eat it again the next year
But I know that's not what you were saying, food over the limit ,they should give to the food banks of the world rather than throw it out. Restaurants / people who didn't eat their food it should go to the extremely poor/

I get it,

Thx Cal, for the chance to vent!

One obvious solution is for people to buy only as much food as they will actually consume.

part of the problem is making a big shopping trip once a week for groceries. I'm trying to just buy what I need as the week goes on, so I throw away less, and the food I'm eating is fresher, because I'm buying it the day I'm eating it. Easy in the summertime, not sure how this will work in winter.
