The Deep Ocean Is Crucial to a Healthy Planet, and Now Companies Want to Strip-Mine It for Metals

Though the deep ocean covers more than half the planet, we know more about the surface of the moon than about life in the far recesses of the sea. Scientists have come together to protect the deep sea before it's too late.

Strip mine the ocean? Yeah, that's a brilliant idea - let's put yet more waste and crap into the water so that more fish and marine life dies and more water is poisoned. Whatever do these people use for brains? Must be big dollar signs 'cuz anyone with any intelligence can see what a horrible idea this would be.

Oh, come on, people, what could POSSIBLY go wrong? I mean, really. We've been pumping oil out of the ocean for years, and nothing's gone wrong! Apart from that 2010 Deepwater Horizons thing in the Gulf of Mexico. And the Kolskaya rig toppling in Russia's Sea Of Okhotsk in 2011. And, okay, Shell had a LEEEETLE itty bitty bit of trouble in the Arctic in 2012. These were just flukes! Couldn't possibly happen twice in one lifetime. Ten or twenty, maybe, but not twice! Iím sorry, did I say that out loud? It was, uh, justóa joke! Yeah! Just a little corporate humor here. Strip-mining the ocean floor will be totally safe with no loss of life, human or otherwise, we totally swear! C'mon, would WE *lie* to you?

We have only just begun to explore the deep regions of our oceans, and every time scientist go down to those regions new species are discovered, not just one, but many. Yet, as our technology opens a window upon these parts of our oceans, there are countries lining up with the intent to stop-mine for the metals and minerals which exist there at the bottom.

Please, why am I not surprised (although quite dismayed) at this? This is the true last frontier on this planet, and we have already done much to contaminate this world of mystery. We cannot sit idle and allow big buisness to destroy our ocean floors, as we have the surface of the planet! The balance of these ecosystems are delicate and it doesn't take much to destroy them. The life within out oceans are so much more fragile than that which inhabits the surface and if great care is not taken, many creatures, never seen by the eyes of man, could very well become extinct before we even knew that they were there.

I applaud those who are taking a stand to protect our oceans but, somehow, more must be done! We cannot allow big buisness further access to the ocean floor. Not knowing what type of destruction they have already brought to our oceans. The common citizen of this planet must join hands to protect our deep waters of our oceans!
