We certainly need to end our dependence on fossil and fissile, beginning with foreign oil.

How can we make solar affordable? We can cheat by reflecting more light on the solar panel. How much can we generate if we reflect a lot of sunlight on the panel? In fact, an incredible 1,000 times the rated value! This feat was achieved three decades ago by a French physicist.

Certainly mirrors are low in cost relative to solar cells.

Also, solar panels make the most power during the middle of the day, when demand is highest.

Take away the military and financial subsidies of petroleum and you'll suddenly see that solar and wind are a lot cheaper than their fossil fuel counterparts. Hell just take away big oils subsides at home and put that money into solar and then solar would sky rocket. You could even require all federal buildings to either use green roofs or install solar panels regardless of location. The government is capable of spending a deficit to prime the pump. The US still operates under Keynesian principles but prefers to use the military to prime the pump instead of other more sane avenues.

Michael, I am opposed to all subsidies. You are right that currently we are working on an artificial market, where some industries get tax breaks and some don't. I believe in true free enterprise, the opportunity for every citizen to participate making money without any subsidies.

We have the opportunity to end petroleum. We can buy electric cars, we can design cars to run on fuel from plants, we can design electric cars to run on fuel from plants.

We can use rail for transport, the most fuel-efficient means known. How many of us demand something shipped overnight - that means by air, then truck. How many of us worship celebrities who travel by private jet?
