Cotton growing and the rush to wealth catering to consumerism desertifies.
Most of the water taken from the Sierras in CA goes to cotton.
The Colorado River goes to Las Vegas and the LA-San Diego megalopolis, areas where, before "reclamation" it was known that only a few x 10,000 humans could live.
Other cases of consumer culture devastating natural systems were the Southern Great Plains, where immense grasslands are overgrazed into dust and desert, the Peace River Delta, once a vast wetland; the Owens Valley of the Eastern Sierra Nevada, once filled with wetlands and like the Sacramento/San Joaquin a great flyway and haven for birds in season - later an area, such as surrounding the Aral Sea, of fruit trees and now, either desiccated or urban hell, requiring the destruction and desiccation of yet more of the world.

The World Bank is helping to finance a water restoration in a portion of the lake. I am curious to know what they plan to get back.

This is real.
