As the price of oil and natural gas soars, many customers are looking to coal as an alternative fuel. That means a boon for suppliers -- and a potential bane for the environment.

Huge bane for the environment. Just ask anyone who lives in eastern KY or WV. Also, check out the documentary Burning the Future. It's so heart-breaking to watch what the people of Appalachia have to endure in the name of corporate greed.

Well, I don't know how bad pollution from carbon emissions is in India, but let's face it - the Chinese government doesn't give a damn about it.

Neither does the Oz government Cate, we're making a fortune out of India and China!...Of course we are not guilty of aiding and abetting polluters...In fact, 'WE' have just, very responsibly, brought in a carbon trading policy...Can't remember, offhand, the percentage of locals (It' big!) who do not understand how it might work...Understandably so, as the government has not, as yet, been able to advise the costs involved, or what, when or how!...

Why not coal?...If you've got it, use it!...BUT only after "Carbon Capture" in whatever form it should take becomes a reality. "Sequestering" seems a little short sighted???...Much like mindlessly burying nuclear waste in a leaky boat for all to inherit?...

"Practical application of carbon capture is 12-15 years away"...Why?...Didn't JFK give someone 10 years to drop humans on the moon?...Dollars diverted speak volumes, not to mention major advances in technology...Surely greenhouse gas emissions (Survival of the planet?) rate more attention than a personal hobby to beat the USSR at their own game?...

Solar/wind/tidal etc. are wonderful in theory and time but we have the coal NOW!...

Noted with disgust! They are going to do more harm to the environment if they start using coal. India has some of the worst pollution in the world from using coal. What about hemp? Some people cannot see the forest for the trees. The oil companies and phamacutical companies would fight this to the death because it would be a cheap source of fuel as well as medicine. When will they ever learn?
