Soap nuts are a great alternative to laundry detergents. Mike Adams of Newstarget.com (now NaturalNews.com)sells them on his BetterLifeGoods.com website for $30.00 per kilo, which can do 200 loads. Other sites sell smaller quantities (more appropriately sized for dorm life).
