To these fertile urban pastures comes an idea with almost too many layers of good. A non-profit called Growing Home has converted two vacant lots, so far, into organic gardens. Local produce costs less-both economically and environmentally-so why not?

In Vancouver, BC, that has always been done. In the autumn one can see clotheslines full of gai choy being dried for winter by Canadian-Chinese Families that they grow in the back yard, Canadian - Italians put up greenhouses for figs and grapes in Thunder Bay, Ontario....look to recent immigrants for tips.

I'm glad there is a move to grow more food in cities, but be careful about possibly polluted soils.

That's true, Judy, people growing food in cities should test the soil for lead. If it's there, it's not difficult to mitigate. And people in Chicago have always had gardens in their back yards too. This is a bit of a larger operation.
