The United States is cutting economic aid for the Palestinian Authority, partly because of "unhelpful actions" by the Palestinians according to a US diplomat.

Fair & balanced???
There may well be cutbacks in US aid around the world ....
But if they need fair cutbacks & bigger savings, they should cut back on military aid round the globe (and not give MORE to Israel)!! - especially where US military material has been used against civilians ....

But a little dose of realism - Israel prevents implementation of many projects in the Occupied Territories ... checkpoints, transfer of funds to the PA or Gaza government organisations (Hamas led) ..... So budgets allocated there are on paper, but don't reach the country, don't get used for implementation of the projects approved ... It is quite common to reduce budgets when previous budgets haven't been expended .... So Israel's occupation and oppression causes cut backs in budget allocations to Palestine ...

Mind you - the US COULD create pressure to enable projects to be implemented properly in the OPT ......
But they don't

My reading : so now the Palestinans will pay for the surveillance cameras on Temple Mount including the energy for 24/7 monitoring and, on top of that also get punished for having turned to the ICC (".constraints on our global assistance budget.")

...Out of words for this latest outrageous move by the US, on behalf of the Nutyahoo I would add)

Why not just cancel all aid completely and have the Palestinians foot the bill for all war expenses in Syria and Iraq, when the unsettled confict between them and Israel is the core reason behind it all!
Sorry, can only use bitter sarcasm to express my anger.

Under the same chapter of "fair and balanced foreign policy' you can probably post here in about 2 weeks the official confirmation of the raise to about $ 4,5 bn in aid to ISRAEL, after the Obama and Nutyahoo meeting in early Nov.! (in addition to some military gifts, of course)

Angela and Evelyn have already explained perfectly how "fair and balanced" this cut is, but also shows the hand of master Netanyahu in it too. Most in the West acknowledge that (young) Palestinians are starting to rebel because of continuing oppression, continuing provocation, poverty and being underprivileged, and general hopelessness. Punishing their leadership with cuts for something vague as "unhelpful actions taken by the Palestinians", is certainly lead to more rebellion and violence and stands in sharp contrast to "The visit is part of a diplomatic scramble to defuse tensions many fear could herald a new intifada, or Palestinian uprising." This cut intends to do rather the opposite, I would think.

Keep in mind that Obama did say in his latest press conference about the violence outbreak on temple mount and East Jerusalem that "Israel has the right to defend its law and order" and also that from now on "the parties will have to settle their unresolved conflict".

That could be a parahrase for oppsosite intentions, rather than "defuse" or de-conflict" the situation, like Lona says. One really really has to wonder... Do they need war SO BADLY?

Noted. Thanks, Sam.

This is completely baffling to me, (other than the usual political love the US has for Israel), why we would reduce aid to a country that doesn't even have anything close to a nuclear weapon.....while we continue to massively support Israel with our tax dollars---a country that HAS a nuclear weapon?

And the U.S. was giving $370 Million; being reduced to $290 Million.
Isn't Israel getting much, much more than that amount?

Seems like we are "starving David while feeding Goliath." Makes no sense. If we were to reduce aid to all countries across the board in the same percentage---THAT might make sense.

US was ALLOCATING $370 Million .... that is budget, not expenditure
But the realities on the ground (Thank you Israel) ensure that the PA & Palestinian organisations & international NGOs can't really SPEND what is allocated for programmes & projects ... Unspent budgets tend to point to priority areas for cutting down 'planned investment"
And yes, Lois - almost 10 times more!
