As Junta Counts Its Fake Votes, Photos Show Burma's Reality

For Burma's generals it was a weekend to celebrate as they counted the votes in a constitutional referendum, but for the Burmese seeking shelter in the aftermath of the cyclone, without clean water or sanitation, it was another meaningless charade.

Past form means that it shouldn’t be a surprise when the Burmese military rulers act in an eccentrically despotic manner, but how can they not believe that holding this referendum in the wake of what has happened was beyond the pale, even by their standards – especially in a country where the disaster is likely to be viewed as some kind of divine retribution for the junta’s repression of the monks following last year’s protests.
