Three large explosions from the Sun over the past few days have prompted U.S. government scientists to caution users of satellite, telecommunications and electric equipment to prepare for possible disruptions over the next few days.

When your lights and or Tv signal alone goes out on a clear day and you cell phone or Internet connection [Hotspot types] don't have a signal...just remember it could be due to a solar flare over the next few days. Prepare for such just as you would for any power outage...have another light source other than that of electricity handy...flashlights..candels maybe...etc. and know where the nearest 'pay phone' or land line is :-) ..and maybe a good book to read near by if there is light but no tv or internet service.

I don't suppose there is any chance that the solar storms would only knock out Fox News?

: )

Yesterday, I was at the supermarket and the lights went out several times for a few seconds at a time, with no storms in the area. Should we buy more sunscreen?

I have two solar lights, two battery lights, loads of flashlights and dozens of candles. I think I'll be OK for a few weeks. Come to think of it.....I'd better put batteries on the to-do list. Oh Yes.....loads of books too. Thanks for the posting Jae.

Solar flares are nothing new. Just part of this reality. We need to learn to deal with them.

I first heard about solar storms at a serious, but popular astronomy conference, so it's not scare-mongering but genuine science. What interesting times, and just a reminder of what a little blip on the face of the cosmos we are.

In an ever increasing comunication sytem that ties satellite with so much of our personal use of electronic itmes that this is something, as Marie mentioned....that we must learn to live with. That's why it's good to know when they are likely to happen so that we are not in question as to why things are being disrupted or that might go silent without obvious reason, should they. That 'be prepared',education/understanding of things :-) .

Yes Julie D., we certainly are just a little blip on the face of the cosmos...Reality checks like this one are a reminder of that 'big' fact :-).
