This photo really shows the insanity of this! I understand if a village needs food, but I thought this whale has too much mercury to be safe for food. So why the killing? I am so sorry this was allowed.

TY Claudia dear sister. How truly sad this is, my heart aches for them.
TY Nyack C.my friend for sending me the petition site to sign, here is what I wrote:

6:21 pm PDT, May 25, FreeSpirit Running, Florida
You, the people that are doing the killing, this is for you: YOU ALL HAVE BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS!!! How do you sleep, good? Thinking of all the innocent mammals you are killing? Thinking...hmmm, maybe RED? BLOOD RED? You disgust me beyond belief! This needs to be stopped now! PRONTO! These killings are for no reason at all! Needless deaths! It upsets me so much to see them die. Please stop the killings now!

# 1,029:

I sure do pray that these people who are in charge of these killings gets the petition, hopefully to stop & cease to exist again! I am horrified that this is even allowed to happen to our mammals, it sickens me to no end.

Thanks again for the update Claudia hon.

Blessings to all on Earth, people & animals/mammals/plants,

FreeSpiritRunning...

As Milca said, this is happening in a "civilized world" .What a shame to all such places. Then, should I be upset to belong to a "third world" country ,where many wrong things do exist ,but from where many signatures and actions join against these cruelties ? Noted and signed, thank you for bringing this up.

How horrifying. I cannot understand this. The whales must be so frightened and distressed.

It's hard when people consider this sort of thing an historic cultural practice and they don't want to be told what to do by others, but ...
it's unbearable to think about, and we humans really need to change for the sake of the planet, its flora and fauna. We especially need to take care of the oceans and its creatures since human activity has depleted the marine environment so much.

Thanks, Claudia

Thank you for letting us know about that petition, Leonor. I did go to look it up, and there are very few signatures on it because the petition has an improper target, as is so typical of the petitions here at Care2. SOMEONE NEEDS TO START A NEW PETITION ON THIS WITH THE TARGET PROPERLY FILLED IN!!!!

This is ridiculous the way countries allow for this kind of babaric actions on innocent animals. They won't be happy until all of GOD's creatures are destroyed and their extinction are lost forever.

Yes, Nyack,Veronica from Animcord group and I have both contacted this petition author about the target - but no response, unfortunately.
I think we need a petition to Care2 about the proper definition of "Target" - it seems the majority of petition writers are unclear about it.

Noted and signed previously. Thankyou Claudia,
I definitly second the comments about the target, this should be explained in detail to anyone starting a petition, improper targets put people off signing, with the result that few signatures are obtained, as in this case!!

(This letter is prepared to inform you about the issue. Pleae try to shorten and personalize your letter before sending.)

Honorable Officials of Denmark and Faeroe Islands,

Citizens worldwide are sickened by the annual vision of whales marooned in blood-red waters. Islanders stone, gouge, spear, hack and bludgeon some 2,000 to 3,500 long- and short-finned pilot whales under the bizarre notion that God created these animals for the Faeroese to butcher alive.

During a pilot whale “grind” boats chase whales into shallow bays, where the disoriented creatures are easily gored with metal gaffs. Waters turn a brilliant red by the time killers sink a 6-inch blade past blubber and flesh to sever a whale’s spinal cord.
Finally, vital blood vessels are cut, leaving a bay littered with mangled whales. Unbelievably, whale drives are festive community events. Young children even take part in the massacre of terrified animals.

I cannot support tourism in the Danish Faeroe Islands until whale kills are permanently terminated. I urge officials to legally shield wildlife from abuse, including the senseless slaughter of whales for sport.

Moreover, the population count for North Atlantic long-finned pilot whales is unknown. The Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats classifies them as “strictly protected.” Each time the Faeroese kill even 100 whales, entire pods and family groups are erased. This weakens the their gene pool and harms ecosystems in the North Atlantic and the North Sea.

The whale drive is illegal in other European states. Residents of the Faeroe Islands don’t use the toxin-contaminated flesh left behind. Tradition, entertainment and sport never justify outright torture. For these reasons, I respectfully ask you to outlaw whale drives in the Danish Faeroe Islands.

Thank you,

We should not stop until the Faeroe Islands stops killing these beautiful animals.

This is insane! In the 21st century we still behave as barbarians. With this brutal killing of marine animals, Canada bludgeoning baby seals, Japan and Iceland have returned to whaling (a 17th century practice,) Middle East countries keeping women covered head to foot and not allowed to go outside without a male family member. What kind of world have we progressed into?

Who & what do we Boycott to get this issue taken Seriously? Who do we petition to get this publicized? The 150 comments here of sadness accomplish nothing if it doesn't bring more awareness to this horrific issue. This MUST be made Public! I will be fwding this petition to news stations across the country, please consider doing the same.

It's so disheartening to learn efforts to stop this sadistic slaughter failed & that, in fact, the numbers killed have risen. Signing petitions, sending emails - it seems so futile. But, as more & more become aware of this barbaric practice surely the Faroe Islanders must eventually bow to the weight of protest.

Target: Mr. Johannesen

Dear Mr. Johannesen,

I have seen the horrific images of the barbaric slaughter of Long-finned pilot whales on the Faroe Islands. I find it disgraceful that this tradition, whereby hundreds of animals annually die a horrific death, is being kept alive. This hunt serves no reasonable purpose and causes great animal suffering.

I implore you to ban the pilot whale hunt. As long as this slaughter continues, I shall certainly not visit your islands as a tourist.

Yours faithfully,

Please take action: write, protest, let them WE ALL KNOW about this barbaric slaughter!
