In the face of international condemnation and scientific advice, the government of the Solomon Islands is poised to allow another export of wild-caught dolphins.

Earth Island Institute claims that up to 18 Indo-pacific bottlenose dolphins of 30 being held in pens on Gavutu are destined to be shipped to Panama in the Caribbean in the near future.

In April of this year, a working group of CITES, the body that regulates the international trade in endangered species instigated an in-depth review of trade in Solomon Islands dolphins because of its concerns about the status of dolphin populations in Solomon Island waters.

The last export of Solomon Islands dolphins to the Philippines was deemed illegal by the Philippine Scientific Authority and a ban on future imports of Solomon Islands dolphins was advised.

“The Solomon Islands government must stop pandering to the few individuals who are getting rich from the dolphin exports and respect international law.”... Read Full Article

This pressure by the CITIES group should help. The movie "The Cove" is my town this weekend, I intend to see it and weep. The OceanSentry.org is a good news site. As always, thank you Claudia.

Isn’t it always all about money, It seems to be repetitious and dull. In fact it is sad, cruel and viscous with bad intentions. I hope there Government Takes note on the lack of interest form the Philippines, and make the move for the betterment of change for our fined friends. Thanks to the Philippines for the stand.
Thank you for the information Claudia.....

Doesn't whole scale international condemnation carry any weight anymore? These places have to be boycotted as they operate soley for greed and don't understand anything else.

These beautiful mammals should be left to live their lives as God intended.

Thanks Claudia. I have an affinity for anything dolphin. They are very intelligent creatures and easily capture the heart. It saddens me to see them confined and treated as if they were commodities or house pets. They are wild animals and should be respected as such. Kudos to the Philippines for taking a stand.

I'm shocked and horrified that this is happening. People shouldn't be able to buy and sell wild animals.

Just thrilled to a small school of dolpins off the coast. They were a true delight!!
First, we had to fight for them being killed when caught in tuna nets, now they're being caught & farmed out for money. Angry? Spread it, and start with asking legislators to condemn, and to get U. N. to condemn!!!

For one they should be allowed to "pen" the dolphins let alone ship them for their own greed. DOlPHIN FREE!!!
Don't spend a dime in the Solomans til they learn to respect international law!

Thanks Claudia...

Please visit this site, truly disturbing...

Went to read the full article and WOOSH...lap top shut down so didn't get to view it, may later, did want to say this is so wrong from what I did read, and these special creatures - just like the whales are so endearing to humans and we treat them like Do Do (all I can say without my comment getting taken off)

This is so upsetting...so many bloody baths of these animals so much harm, just hurt my heart, and sorry, frankly I am crying again...gotta get off this site for awhile...

Thanks for this...and will try to get the word around...is there any petition that we can sign and flush the system out???
