An international fisheries group set up to protect Atlantic tuna has done the opposite and driven one species of the fish, the bluefin, to the edge of extinction, environmentalists said Thursday.

On the eve of a 10-day meeting in Brazil of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), environmentalists accused the group of ignoring the advice of its own scientists and setting fishing quotas for bluefin tuna that have drastically depleted stocks.

ICCAT has for decades set quotas above what its own scientists have recommended for bluefin tuna. Those quotas are systematically exceeded by industrial fleets, which over-fish the species. Combined with illegal fishing, this has caused the population to decline by more than 85 percent in the eastern Atlantic and by more than 90 percent in the western Atlantic.

The environmentalists also called for stricter regulation of the trade in sharks, which are often caught up as "by-catch" in commercial tuna-fishing operations and are also being targeted directly by fishing fleets for their fins and meat....

What are these people playing at? It's hard to believe that they are actually going to put fishermen out of business too by behaving this way. *********************There's a petition for the blue fin tuna at:

It isn't lack of money Claudia, it is because of money these things happen. Greed and more greed.

The over fishing of the Med has made the blue fin a lost cause. It is heart breaking news. Thank you, Caludia, for giving us this notes, although it makes me sick at heart, the imformation is so important.

ICCAT should put stricter limits or bans on fishing bluefin tuna and sharks -- they should get serious about it quickly, before it's too late.

Overfishing has got to stop -- the fishers are destroying their own livelihood in the end by overfishing the seas as what will happen when there's no fish left?

We must protect and preserve what we have left, or soon there will be nothing left at all. What will we tell our children and grandchildren, and what will they say back to us?

A ban was suggested for bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean and immediately many countries have stated that they will not abide by it as they need to fish. Pointing out that if there is not a moratorium on tuna fishing then there will be no income ever again doesn't seem to impress these countries.

Mans infinity to inflict damage upon the planet and it's wildlife infuriates me.why can they not see that their greed sooner than later is going to put their jobs and livelihood at risk. What will they do then?.
