The bottom line, is that mental illness and substance abuse very often go hand-in-hand. Parents who spot signs of depression should have their child assessed for mental health issues

I think theres alot more to depression other than the use of Marijuana, how in the hell would our government know the statistics on this study anyways. Look @ virgina thats trying to execute a man with mental illness, thats enough to make me wanna smoke pot. The bottom line is the Gov is full of it and they should keep their beaks closed on issues such as mental health, they have other things they need to be worried about, like the WAR, I dont know of any doctors at that white house and with that being said this is one issue that they need to let the experts handle and they are farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr from being experts. Thanks Michael. Dana~.~

DO NOT READ THE GOVT'S REPORT, we have and it is filled with lies and terrible deceptions!!!!! Check non-biased up-to-date scientific results, in stead!! For a great start in true research, explore MPP.org!!! Marijuana is MUCH more likely to relieve depression~~~~~

Well for goodness sakes, what would you expect the government to say?

Well, I don't know what the government says, but one think is sure...drugs, no matter what they are called, are bad IF YOU DON'T CONTROL THEM. Until the '60 s we had an organised, law abiding, christian community...drugs, free love, anti system groups changed the pattern. Now some of them are still for free drugs allowance...No matter if its Marijuana or LSD...drugs are bad for us!.

i honestly believe marijuana helped my depression and prevented me from committing suicide. i don't consider it a drug because it comes from nature and is a versatile herb with so many benefits. but it does affect people in different ways, so it should be looked at on an individual basis. as for me, marijuana saved my life! and i'm not ashamed to say so.

I'm with Kayla on this one. I think it has to be looked at on a individual basis.

I've seen lives ruined and helped by marijuana.

Good points, Kayla! Enric, no you are wrong about history and wrong concerning results of proof from more current scientific studies! Gosh, I could write an entire book to your short comment, but I am too busy reaserching and continuing a life of education~~~

That argument that it comes from nature makes no sense.. we all come from nature.. every substance comes from nature. Cocaine and Heroin come from nature. It is my belief that Marijuana is a pointless drug used to ease pain and create zombies. A marijuana user only thinks about pot and lives for pot. Where is our world coming too? Why can't people just accept that they have problems, they have a body, they have emotions - and the only way to truly deal with that is to live as a free drug free individual who does not hide from their pain.

Yes, that is true there is a very high addiction factor Rose.

Again, like Kayla said it has to be taken on an individual basis.

I think one must weigh the benefits versus the liabilities to make the right choice. Personally, I don't think marijuana is the right choice for me. I've seen the effects that it has on other people. People do become like zombies(in some cases) and they have a never ending craving for the drug.

There are also some health benefits to it to. I know cancer patients use it to help them cope with pain and there are probably some other health benefits as well.

I don't think that it should be illegal. In other countries it's not; people have the choice on whether or not to smoke it. I think it should be left up to the individual to get the facts and make the right choice. We can't slap a law on everything.

Yeah, Scott! Thank you for telling your own personal truths. I have some chronic disabilities, including severe fibromyalgia, depression, and, allergies. Due to the immense pains with fibromyalgia I had several strong pain prescriptions. However, due to severe allergies which cause near constant nausea, I have no real appetite and could not eat enough food in a day to "balance" the pain medicines. One day, I stopped ALL pain medications - cold turkey. [I had no withdrawls which I researched & discovered it had a lot to do with being a redhead!] Now, I take only my most necessary medicines, as well as, as the "natural remedy" my doctor suggested. Back in the day, as they say, many figured I'd end up a hopeless burn-out. Well, I've taught them a lesson. At age 48, I got my BSJ degree with a high GPA, and, last fall I got my MEd with a 4.0 AGPA, and now I'm working a doctorate degree. I can well imagine the comments this next bit will ignite, but it is time for the TRUTH! When our kids were teens & "messing around" slipping in school, we told them that if they straightened up & got back to their Honor Roll academic status we'd allow them to smoke pot at home. YEP, every one of them quickly became Honor Roll students again & stayed that way!! Marijuana CAN help one focus better!! Then one of our sons died & the entire family has dealt with severe depression ever since, yet the medicines we were prescribes caused other problem, so we now take them, but much less & not daily. This old hippie is imensely proud to explain that all 12 of my biological descendants have high genius IQs, are immensely creative, and, very lovingly close!! To anyone STILL stubborn convinced that pot is bad, again I plea: "Please, look up recent medical & scientific research, and, ignore the propganda lies put out in government reports!!!"
Peace~

Enric, in response to your comments I advise you to immediately get yourself the current issue of DISCOVER magazine!! It has an amazing up-to-date article on past and current research concerning LSD, etc.!
