Air France is being sued by a passenger who says he was "shocked" and "humiliated" after the airline told him he was too big to fit in a single seat . The airline told him he would have to purchase an additional seat if he wanted to fly.

At the very least this isn't fair to the passenger. It's sending a very negative and discriminatory message to passengers.

"If you're overweight we'll charge you extra."

That's not a good way to do business.

If you weigh the same as 2 people, shouldn't you pay the same as 2 people?

It does cost the airline twice as much if you weigh 300 pounds.

I think one needs to look at the message being sent out and whether or not that's a good business practice. I don't think it is and it really is borderline discrimination.

This is discrimination! There is no question! I have heard of other airlines that have done the same! It is not that it costs more it is a question of treating everyone the same. A lot of disabled are obese do we charge them more? Do we charge parents of crying babies and children more? Do we charge the elderly more because they need more attention? Or how about the person who drinks too much? Or the man who falls asleep on your shoulder? What IS fair???? Thanks, Michael!

You're welcome Linda and thank you for your comments.

Hopefully other people will see it as discrimination and stand up against it.

I'm open-minded, I think. But, from the airline's point of view it costs $x to fly a person who weighs 150 pounds from point A to point B. It costs $x times 2 to fly a person who weighs 300 pounds from point A to point B. How is that discrimination? Please explain.

Because one person has to pay more than another person when the first person is still one person.
