I took a little field trip yesterday to Walmart and paid a visit to the pet food aisle. It was one of the most discouraging field trips I've ever taken. I'm not going to mention any product names but do I have some interesting pet food sales tricks

Very good, there should be more articles on this. Read someone´s news the other day (was it yours, Michael?) about the rate of cancer in dogs, a massive amount, and this is why. Our poor friends are fed rubbish, so no wonder the majority end up with fatal diseases.

Hope an ethical company soon starts developing PROPER food for canines and felines (there´s an ad that appears very frequently here on Care2 but although better than the usual crap, for sure, it doesn´t actually convince me either.

Thanks Michael.

I read that story but I don't think it was me that posted it.

Was it the one about Tasmanian Devils?

No, the Devils one was about the face tumours they´re all getting, the poor sweet things... This one concentrated on sending donations to a university where they´re trying to develop a vaccine, I think it was, to halt this big problem.

The one I mean was about the rate of cancer in dogs, I think it was something like 1 dog out of every 4!! Scandalous, and this, the crap food that´s sold for them, is why!!

Walmart do not give a damn about what they sell anyway, they're a disgusting company, here in the UK we have Asda which is owned by Walmart, now I don't shop there any more!

I only feed my cat on Burns as it is totally holistic with no byproducts and is not tested on animals!
Thanks Michael.

PLEASE NOTE that this does NOT pertain to JUST WalMart!! These problems are EVERYWHERE. Another marketing technique not mentinoed in the article is the use of healthy graphics and photos on the packaging, including earthy colors and natural looking foods. This DOES NOT MEAN the food is automatically healthy for your pet. I have found that the best way to buy food for pets is online or in health food stores. MOST 'SUPER' STORES, PET SUPPLY STORES AND GROCERY STORES DO NOT CARRY HIGH QUALITY PET FOOD BECAUSE IT'S MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE CHEAP STUFF. I highly recommend checking Dr. Lisa Pierson's website for more information about what you shoulod be feeding your pets at www.catinfo.org. The site is geared to the proper diet for cats, but the basic health rules still apply for dogs, so PLEASE CHECK IT OUT. Your pet's life may be depending on it.

There is a list here of petfood that has no byproducts and is not tested on animals:

Thanks for that info Lorie and Lorraine. I also believe a lot of the stuff that vets sell is complete and utter crap (VERY expensive crap). The following is NOT the reason I came to this conclusion, by the way, but it was simply a way to confirm what I already knew, but once I was at the vet's waiting room by myself, when a woman came in (by herself, no animals). When the person inside finished, she barged in without even asking me whether I minded (I protested but she said it would only take a minute). As you could hear absolutely everything that was said, the conversation (or rather monologue) made me sigh... The woman was a rep from Hills or one of those typical expensive crap food with a fancy name that vets sell (usually with the word Science in them to fool people), and she just gave him all this spiel about this and that ingredient and how good these ingredients were for cats and dogs, blah blah blah, and he just accepted everything, she happily gave him a bunch of samples and he continued selling their crap. She clearly only had one motive: sell sell sell, and he only had one motive: sell sell sell (this vet nearly killed one of my cats after making her suffer for a long time and leaving both her and me traumatised for life - he also prolonged the misery and suffering of two of my parents' cats to end up euthanising them eventually, after getting tons of money out of them). Needless to say, I now travel much further to another vet who I trust.
