The ASPCA has promoted the New York State Quick Kill bill which passed the NYS Assembly Agricultural Committee today. It allows animals to be immediately killed at state shelters if they are in "psychological pain". Please let the ASPCA hear your voice!

As a member of the ASPCA I couldn't help but write to the Chair. Mary Jo White about the "Quick Kill Bill". How do you determine "psychological pain"? Does Ed Sayres determine it? This has got to be withdrawn or Ms White is NOT doing her job for the animals nor myself as a member!!!

The ASPCA will loose out on many donations with their support for this Bill. I'm left speechless by this. Perhaps it's time the ASPCA closed it's door on animal welfare they don't seem to be doing a very good job.

i cannot tell you how many cats i've rescued who were terrified, anti-social and just plain mean which have since become well-adjusted cats living comfortable lives. peta and aspca don't fully understand cats like true rescuers do.

This can't be accepted...we need to do more than send emails. All animals, including humans (well maybe most humans) are suffering from mental and physical pain if they have been rescued from a traumatic situation ... Would the NY legislature advocate putting down the homeless or abused immediately because they are feeling pain, mental or physical?

Kenneth L. (266)
Friday February 17, 2012, 11:10 am
AS Catherine says a lot of cats are scared, hide back in their cages, generally 'psychologically' in a bad state due to all sorts of factors---trauma of being caught if a stray, new strange surroundings, strange noises in shelter, loud noises, loss of familiar food and shelter sources, and simply not used to being in close proximity to people, etc on and on. That doesn't mean they won't open up, warm up, eventually if given half a chance and some TLC in a safe environment. THE USE OF A LABEL LIKE 'PSYCHOLOGICAL PAIN' is some human's idea in which to justify euthanasia so they don't have to spend the time or effort to help the cat open up and warm up and be adoptable. It's a crock.

This is not what the ASPCA is about, promoting these bills is wrong. I think Mary Jo White is in the wrong job how did she ever manage to make it to the chair position on this board, I think she should resign and if she does not then she should be fired.

What animal isn't in "psychological pain" when in the shelter system? Do they now mean to kill every animal they get their grubby little hands on? These are not the kind of people that should ever have a job in what's supposed to be animal rescue.

All lives matter! As a whole we have become a society that loves to kill so I am the least surprised of this new KILL BILL! If we do not blink an eye when thousands healthy pets loose life every single day all the while having done nothing wrong to deserve this, but have their lives snuff off, as if their lives were nothing but a thing or possession, then what does one expect, when we do not value a healthy life rights to life to begin with! Thanks Beth.

Euthanasia or any other method of killing shelter animals is horrifying in its own right. The reality is there are far more animals needing homes than there are people willing to adopt.

This bill sounds like it might lead to a significant amount of shelter abuse. Who determines the nature and kind of "psychological pain" a given animal has to go undergo before it is put down? Who will be responsible for making these assessments?

I need more background on all of this before I make a decision. Anyone?

Thx. >^..^< M.

From the text:

"The job of the Chair of the Board of Directors is to ensure the mission is followed, to protect the reputation and integrity of the organization, and to hold the CEO accountable. In this task, ASPCA Board Chair Mary Jo White has failed. Under her leadership, she has allowed Ed Sayres to turn the ASPCA’s mission on its head, promulgating policies and legislation that are the antithesis of what an animal protection organization is supposed to be doing, and the antithesis of what the ASPCA tells their donors they represent.

Sayres has promulgated legislation to kill animals with no holding period of any kind based on an animal’s perceived state of mind, a declaration of war on shy and scared animals, as well as feral cats. Sayres has turned a blind eye to rampant neglect, abuse, and killing at the NYC pound, and even sends animals there to be killed. Sayres has fought No Kill reform efforts in places like San Francisco, Austin, and Tallahassee, going so far as to protect a shelter director who committed animal cruelty. In other words, under her leadership, she has allowed Ed Sayres and the ASPCA to become a hoarder of money, a defender of shelter abuse, and a fighter against lifesaving.

In your own words, in your own way, please let her know how disappointed you are. Ask her to step in and protect the animals she is pledged to protect. And tell her she must start by ensuring that the ASPCA’s “Quick Kill Bill,” A05449, be immediately withdrawn. Let her know that the fate of thousands of animals are in her hands and she must finally start living up to her responsibilities as ASPCA Board Chair.

Please be thoughtful. Please be civil. But please be firm and offer no apologies."

Shocking to hear this! I sent a letter to Mary Jo White asking her to please withdraw this terrible Quick Kill Bill! I can't believe that she wouldn't have the insight to see that thousands of adoptable animals even many people's lost pets could be euthanized as the result of this inhumane bill which is indeed the complete antithesis of what the ASPCA's stated goals and mission is! What ever happened to the ASPCA's goals of promoting the "no kill" nation? I've been a member of the ASPCA for years but now upon hearing this outrageous news, I will now withdraw my membership. It sounds like they definitely need to get rid of this board chair and the CEO too!

ASPCA has a lot of shelters around the nation. This is very sad, but when you point a finger at someone, you need to look at how many are pointing back at you. If people would get their pets spayed or neutered, we wouldn't have unwanted pets in shelters. If you are part of the problem, then stop and spay and neuter your pets before you blame others who are trying to clean up you mess. That being said, God Bless all the innocent victums of man irresponsibility.

mariangela m. (24)
Monday February 27, 2012, 5:00 pm
Dear Dianne, of course pets must be spayed or neutered, that is quite obvious. What is not obvious and logical is that an association _theoretically_ devoted to animal protection _practically_ kills them in shelters or promotes shameful laws likes this one. In my humble opinion this is a betrayal of the good faith of many animal lovers.

Noted thanks Beth The ASPCA won't be getting my monthly donation if the money goes to killing the ones they can't be bothered to save.; it is so sad that an organisation that should protect will possibly be able to kill, if not them directly, you can be sure the smaller shelters will take it up!!! AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH This has really FXXXXXG made me mad...what about their so called "No kill shelter??
