The image of that grown man shooting a dog as if his life, or anyone else's was at risk. That he wouldn't even bother to engage other than his police state thinking element of his brain. Cops have gone down hill as people.

Oh no, another Cop shoots a dog story. My God, yet another cop wets his pants, can't read the situation and goes for his gun instead of his brains. Give an idiot a gun and he'll shoot anything that moves. The epileptic is fortunate he didn't have an episode while being pulled over for speeding, the cop would have shot him because he 'made a threatening gesture'. Problem is cops are NEVER accountable, look what they did to Mayor Calvo's two labs who were running away from the.

Dianne ~ thanx so much for posting this, and God bless the Lexus project! I have been outraged by this story since I first saw it posted under CARE2 Causes a couple days back. Everytime I looked online, I could find nothing new. As an epileptic, I am following this story very closely. I cannot believe that Star is still alive. I pray she has some quality of life though, since they are not really saying anything about her condition. It's also nice to see that some people, like this cop scumbag, still treat people like me with epilepsy, as "mental defectives." This is what we were called, as early as the 1920's. People with my disease were institutionalized in asylums.

And like Ken says, yet another cop shoots a dog story. I believe in personal gun ownership for protection, but with all of these shootings, I am seriously starting to question whether cops should be able to carry guns at all. And I have both active and retired officers in my family!

the stupid coward police shot her and then finished her off by euthanasia. they are trying t o hide the ugly truth. Crooked cops! I hope the owner sues them to the utter most! gun-happy scared cops! they should be trained to use commands / and a dart gun with a medical serum to aid the dog to be relaxed and sleepy not to shoot to kill to put an animal to death. I hate NY!

There needs to be training for dealing with dogs by the police dept. Shooting shouldn't always be the answer. The Police need to work along with animal control and learn how to handle these animals or have animal control come and take care of it. This dog was protecting his family like most dogs due when they feel their family is in danger.

signed the petition...but it says Star bled to death? what is real? Did the cops go shoot another dog and switch it to cover up Star's death?
Stupid cop should have reached for the ever useful taser gun..works on protestors, pregnant women, etc. Or was the cop going to just use it on the epileptic ? Anyone on the ground is fair game for a taser test...let's see..is it loaded..? Zap!!

Star, the pit bull mix that was shot by an NYPD officer on Monday in the East Village is alive and recovering slowly. "Star's condition is still serious, but thankfully she is showing signs of slight improvement," Richard Gentles, the press representative for Animal Care & Control says. Gentles declined to elaborate further on Star's condition, citing unspecified legal and privacy issues. Asked whether Star will be placed for adoption if she survives, or if she'll be returned to her owner, Gentles says, "It is too early to know what the final outcome will be."

Employees of the KFC on 14th Street that Star and her owner, Lech Stankiewicz, were known to frequent, told a reporter that they hadn't seen Stankiewicz outside the restaurant since he was removed to the hospital on Monday.

Gentles added that those who would like to help animals like Star can donate to the ACC's aptly-named Special Treatment and Recovery Fund (STAR Fund), which supports the treatment that injured or ill cats and dogs receive in the organization's facilities.

S&N thanks for the update, glad the doggie is still with us, hope she's going to be ok. Now I see why she got shot, she's a pitbull so naturally the cop would automatically shoot first and ask questions later. STOP THE SHOOTINGS, YOU GUN-HAPPY COPS!

Why is it "This is all we are permitted to say at this time."?? Why the secrecy? Those of us who live with, love and understand Pit Bulls care a great deal about Star, whether or not she recovers and what happens to her!. The lifestyle of the person Star was attempting to protect, the person she was obviously devoted to, means nothing. Star obviously loved her devoted companion and reacted in the only way she knew to protect him. Those of us who care about Star, and those of us who want to contribute to her medical expenses, deserve to know a lot more!

I had to watch this though I knew it would hurt like hell. It did! What stood out beside the obvious is that Star had more concern for her fallen friend then the police. After they shot her not one of the dozens of officers went to the aid and or comfort of the man lying on the ground. It was as if he and Star were criminals not victims.

Could the officer had acted differently? I say yes. A bullet is always final. From what I saw the dog charged but was not attacking. She seemed confused and trying to protect her fallen friend. Pepper spray would have done as good a job because Star would have had to deal with what pepper spray can do to one who's been sprayed. Even a being taxed would have been more humane and the police could have taken charge of her while she was down. Bind her put her in a police car behind the wires that separate the police from the arrested individual.

They could have called the pound and had her controlled by someone who could do so without violence. It is plain that the police were not concerned with the gentleman lying in the street hands clinched and not moving an inch.

It's time the police had some training when confronted by someones pet. Fat too many officers have killed a family pet without good reason and that crime has been growing across America..
