Oh I feel her pain right through my computer monitor! According to this article, the visitors to this shelter--and other shelters--walk right past dogs like 'Star.' I ask that you, Dear Jesus, will please find Star a permanent home for Christmas and forever! Amen! Thnx for the fwd Nicole and the post, Dianne!!

It makes me sick how people just get tired of an animal & just throw him or her away like they are nothing. When you take in an animal, it's supposed to be for their entire life! When I adopted my cat, I made a commitment to care for her until the end. What about people like this who have children? Do they just throw their children away when they get tired of them as well???

It sickens me too when I read a story about an owner throwing away their pet like one would discard a used tissue. Have we lost all respect for life on this planet? Hope she finds a good, understanding, loving human and a "forever" home soon!

Noted, tweeted, tweeted and shared. Very sad; hope someone in California sees this poor little dog and gives her a home. Too bad the owners had to do this. Too often people don't realize the responsibility being a pet owner, and when the going gets tough, they get going. Sad and Shameful.

This is awful- but surely someone in the area will see this and be able to help!
The dog probably didn't come directly from a good home, or would have been waiting for rescue from people trusted to do so, not trying to hide it's poor little head, not only from noise but from who knows what memories...

Kara C. (15)
Tuesday December 11, 2012, 5:34 pm
I adopted one of these, she was an elderly black bully breed mutt who sat at the back heartbroken and not eating as her guardian died. I think she saw because for months after I took her home she would panic every time fell asleep. But 2 years later this depressed unadoptable old mutt is the sweetest most loving dog I have ever had the privledge of caring for.

This story is something I have seen way too many times, people need to wake up and realise that dogs are for life (yours or theirs) not just until you get bored or they get noisy and destructive; which may I add is 100% of the time your fault!

In an SPCA advertisement, the camera scanned the dogs in their cages, and I noticed one I've never forgotten. He was sitting at the back of the cage facing the wall. That dog was depressed -- all animals may suffer depression, and there is medication to treat them. At the time, I couldn't adopt a dog, but I desperately wanted that sad, sad fellow. I do implore people not to see such dogs as I potential problem and burden. As I said, there is medication to help. But for the most part dogs' memories are short. A period of constant love and attention, developing the awareness of being again part of a family, will work wonders in such a short time.

This is very sad, but I will say this~ if she was given up to animal control, it is better than just throwing her out to the streets, which is what happens to so many animals. To give a bit of credit to the person who had her, at least she is safe and she has a chance of being rescued especially because she is young. At least she wasn't abused, killed, or thrown out to be hit by a car or tormented by kids. I certainly do hope she finds her forever happy home.

Tears in my eyes for this poor darling and all like her! My own Molly, happily curled up next to me was like this - but if possible worse(!) - she was THREE times the weight she should have been, severely depressed and panic-stricken - and couldn't curl up at all till she had been on a gentle diet for over a year! She was not housetrained or trained in any way, she had never been up stairs and was terrified of them, she had been beaten by some SOB - and she had been shoved from shelter to shelter unwanted (and she wanted to eat my cat!). A year after coming here she was much slimmer and fitter and SOOOOO much HAPPIER and had learned a lot - now she is the happiest little darling ever - and my cat is still here and happy - and they sleep together!

Adopt a shelter dog - they REALLY appreciate you doing it (even if you have to housetrain them, the ASPCA has very good tips for older dogs with this problem) - and you are doing something good for the world - and your dog will love you forever!

(And - though I shouldn't say it - it is two fingers up to the B*****ds who mistreated them so!)

Noted. It is so sad that when people are laid off/unemployed that sometimes they have to give up a pet they can no longer afford to feed. I have seen this happen. Then there are all the places to live that will not allow pets, when you have to find cheaper accommodation. There are many reasons why people give up a beloved pet. This sad doggie looks well fed and I hope and pray a new family is found really soon.

What a sad story. Poor babe, I hope someone adopts her soon. Animals get depressed too when they lose their family members, and this one lost her entire family. To feel so depressed, she must be a truly loving and affectionate dog. Thanks for the post.

Suzanne L. (132)
Wednesday December 12, 2012, 10:43 am
For anyone that might adopt her but is far from her location, there are many dog transport networks now that can move dogs to new homes in other states or even into Canada or vice-versa. Dogs like this one often make wonderful companion animals after they've reached a safe, loving home. They know what they've lost and really appreciate a second chance with all their hearts. I hope someone can see beyond this frightened behaviour so that she gets a new family. .

How tragic this is! Another case of a family or a person adopting a dog without making a life-time commitment! People need to realize that pets aren't disposable items- they are family members and deserve the same consideration that we would give any other family member. To just walk away and leave a pet in a situation like this irresponsible. Please everyone share this story with your friends! Thanks Dianne for posting and to everyone who is sharing this sad story with their friends! She looks like an angel and very loving too.

I think that whilst shelter dogs or rehomed dogs can be hard work its worth the reward in the end, nothing is easy in life but the rewards more than compensate, I truly hope this little one gets a good home! Profile profile profile.

These are the animals that can break your heart. In my shelter, this is mostly associated with cats: the owner died, the owner moved to another apt. that doesn't take animals. their new born is allergic, etc. Depending on the age of the cat, usually older than three years, there is a lot of love necessary to turn these animals around.
Sometimes, they get so cage depressed, they simply do not come around. As we are a non-kill shelter, they are with us for life.

heart breaking. story.
my neighbor found 2 abounded puppies and we fight for their survival now as they were in deep snow.

Happy ending for this doggie... but I agree with Jim Phillips
"Couldn't the owner have left her pet with a friend instead of leaving the terrier at the pound...?"

Thank you Dianne! Thank you all Care2'ers for being kind to animals beyond belief!!!

I cant read the story as I will freak out..
I just pray someone will take her home FOREVER..

I try to volunteer at the local humane society when I feel ok, but I always leave in tears...damn people...I have wanted to ask MANY times how can you give up your pet, would you give up your child? Im afraid of the answer so Ive never asked....

I couldnt help it...I had to read the story and I have to say that I for one would be MORE interested in a dog like her..I would swoop in and rescue her in a heartbeat!
She would attcact me like a magnet.

and so I believe SOMEONE like me WILL take her home. IF not, then she will be with Jesus and will NEVER suffer again.
trying to be positive here.....

"Want to go for a car ride" are usually one of a dog's favorite words to hear, but not when the destination is a means of getting rid of them somehow ... how terribly sad ... why does animal cruelty seem so 2nd nature for humans, we are just so mean and cold ... why?

Thank you, desanka. I hope this show the peoples that were so quick to jump on the dog's owner that not everyone who is forced to take their beloved pet to a shelter is bad. No one can say what fate will hand us. I rejoice that this person was able to reunite with her pet. As for the rest of you, don't be so smug. You can have all the love and commitment and still be forced to part with those you love.

Glad to hear that this sad story seems to have a happy ending.

But nevertheless, I am sure there would have been another way instead of giving this dog to the shelter!

People should not be so thoughtless and get the permission for a dog BEFORE they get the dog!

Another day, another broken heart. Look at all the hurt we do. So tired of seeing animals and children hurt and alone. So sick of being sad.

an animal is for LIFE, and i would only home a needy animal, like i did with my cat May, i had her at age 8 1/2, shes now 13+, she had had 3 owners before me, and was very nervous and scatty. now she very chatty and loving.

When will people who abandon animals realize that they are betraying the most faithful companion they will ever have? People who abandon are for the most part selfish and self-centered. They have no desire to make efforts to find a solution if the animal needs a new home for example. I would do anything to keep my cats and my dog, even sleep on the street. They have been faithful to me and I will be faithful to them. I love them so much!

Thanks so much for the wonderful update, Desanka. So my christmas wish comes true after all. I took back my word on the owner. Well, she may not have any friend who can keep the dog for her. Seeing how much fight she put up to keep her dog, leaving the dog at the shelter must be the last resource. Merry Chirstmas to all who care :)

Americans are so heartless and just throw away pets like they have no feelings. We need to get to a 'no more homeless animals' nation so those that don't deserve to have a pet, won't get one. Please spay and neuter your animals. That is the only way we will get to our goal.
