This saddens me, I love pelicans and when I first volunteered in Wildlife Rehab.. in Marin County we had a pelican that came in with a wing injury. Turns out that it had an infection in its wing and we had to euthanize it.. it was a young juvenile bird and it was really sad. It would not surprise me that they are filled with toxins and in so many cases around the planet.. Pollution is killling off many species.
