In the Netherlands there are 3 million cats, with an estimate of many ten thousands of stray cats. Many provinces in the Netherlands solve the problem by shooting the cats. Every year hunters shoot about 8.000 to 13.500 cats!

For such a liberal country, this action has no excuse. Like other issues, the Netherlands have this attitude that things will correct themeselves. Killing thousands of cats is not an answer.
This country needs a t/s/n program. This killing cannot go on.

I'm sorry Desanka, but this is simply not true. I have a large number of family and friends in Holland and no one has even heard about this, which I tend to believe because 3 of my family are veterinarians. Holland also has some of the strictest and best enforced animal protection laws in the world. About 5-6mos ago a similar story came out about the *cat killings* in Switzerland ~ also unfounded and completely untrue.
I sign many petitions, but only after I've verified their accuracy.

TY Sh, Signed both, n. Who would have guessed that there were so many atrocities committed every day everywhere against so many beautiful animals. We must unite as one unmovable, unshakable roar for those who can but whisper or whose death must speak for them. If we do not come together and educate our world, it will be the greatest tragedy the world has ever known. How many more have to die before we realise that we can change the world if we really WANT TO.

Dear Barbara

Holland has an advanced and humane approach to animal welfare but unfortunately, hunters are shooting feral cats in Netherlands.

This is the article from NL TIMES, you can see in which areas hunters may shoot stray cats.

Sept. 30, 2013
PROTEST AGAINST SHOOTING STRAY CATS

The organization for animal protection wants to put an end to the shooting of stray cats. Hunters may shoot animals in some areas, like Noord-Brabant, Friesland, Flevoland, Utrecht, Zuid-Holland, southern Limburg and Texel. Sometimes, however, hunters mistake ordinary house cats walking in a meadow or along a forest edge for stray cats.

Even the Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals (DSPA) is asking to SING PETITION against the cats hunt in the Netherlands!

I say NO to the killing of stray cats (signed 135.000 people)

GREAT NEWS!!!

From the Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals (DSPA)

In October we called the Netherlands to stop the hunting of stray cats - to says NO to the shooting of stray cats and YES to a friendly approach to the problem of stray cats. The petition received unprecedented attention of the media and the public. There was a massive response to our cry, 136 113 people have signed petition and the hunting of stray cats has stopped!!!

We thank everyone who has supported this action. We have received serious attention to animal welfare!

Update #2 November 7, 2013

The signatures have been delivered together with the signatures of the Animal Protection in the Netherlands. (total Dutch and international signatures: 137.123) Quotes minister Sharon Dijksma: " i love cats myself and this is the last thing i would want". "This shouldn't be a mainstream solution". I say: "this shouldn't be a solution ever"!

We will continue with the international signatures until we reach the 100.000! Thanks for all the support!
