Iran once had a secular leaning government that in spite of not being perfect discouraged this sort of thing. The local population first egged on by local and foreign Socialists rose up against that government. Soon the clerics and the religious under Ayatollah Khomeini joined in and together they overthrew that government back in 1979. A couple of years later the Khomeini bunch tiring of their Socialist erstwhile buddies lined them up in 3000 lot groups on soccer stadiums and started using them for target practice. The remaining Left wing cohorts either fled or joined the winners and the present religious government has been in charge for over 30 years. I would imagine that by now if the majority of people were against practices like this legalised paedophilia, or hanging gay people and other 7 Century “justice” they might have risen up by now and had another revolution deposing the present bunch. Whilst I am sure there are many Iranians opposed to this lifestyle there are presumably even more quite happy to hand over their nine year old daughters to become the playthings of some perverted middle aged man. I guess the only positive note is that prepubescent brides do have a very low fertility rate in a country engaged in a massive population explosion.

As far as old perverts marrying little girls, this is nothing new. In many cases, even in Islamic countries where the government falsely advertises their nation as 'democratic', parents sell their young girls to older men. Even the ministers of tourism advertise to Arab nations to attract Muslim men to come and engage in 'temporary marriages', during which time they can 'legally' have sex with these girls, which their 'moral' Muslim parents are making money from.

I'm glad the useless PM of my country decided to shut down our embassy in Iran, and hoping he'll shut down more of our embassies in Islamic countries.
