a top U.N. body that regulates human rights groups, oversees U.N. committees on women's rights, and crafts resolutions from Internet freedom to female genital mutilation. Slavery & sex slavery are still practiced in this black hole of human rights

Yes, it is shocking that a body that claims to be concerned with human rights of all people would elect anyone who opposes any of those rights. There should not be any Muslim ruled country on any UN human rights group. A few months ago when the Human Rights Council voted to add protecting LGBT people to those protections ALL Muslim members of the group walked out. They are living in the 7th century obeying primitive, barbaric tribal laws. Hard to fathom in this day and age, isn't it?

The OIC (Org of Islamic Conference) made up of 57 Muslim ruled or dominated lands rejects the UN Human Rights Charter and made up their own, the Cairo Declaration, that is based on the human rights unfriendly Sharia Law, which is the laws Mohammed taught in the 7th century. This awful 'law' calls for the killing of those who criticize or leave Islam and gay people, 'adulterers' (normally women only, of course) and rape victims. Why isn't the UN condemning this hateful group and its hateful, discriminatory speech?

This article is also very disturbing, but not at all surprising, when it points out the utter silence of the Obama administration to this obscene UN action.

UN and Human Rights has for a long time been a gross contradiction in terms. After all at one time dear old Idi (butcher) Amin was on the HR committee of the OAU and up for appointment to the UN one. The number of African, Asian and Middle East countries who have a diagrammatically opposite take on Human Rights to that of the West, outnumber Western voters by 3:1. This same group make a great effort to exercise their democratic rights within the world bodies like the UN whilst very often denying their own people back home the same right. Democracy unfortunately, in spite of all the vain hopes, is far from perfect and is not a “magic bullet” to end world misery - but neither are its alternatives.

This it is yet another Muslim controlled country whose idea of human rights is how many abuses it can heap on its own people and others and you are surprised that other Muslim controlled countries allow it onto the council? This country is special and deserves a more priviledged seat than many others because they attempted genocide and the other countries are mostly killing just a few Christians at a time whilst creating hundreds of thousands of refugees. A very poor showing comparatively! Sudan needs to go to the head of the council immediately!!

Can anyone tell me why the U.S. shouldn't stop supporting the fiasco-disaster called the UN?

This is what happens when Islam is in charge. Absolute corruption.

No country should be allowed on any Human Rights Council if they haven't signed on to it and are clearly in violation at every step as the Islamic part of Sudan is. How outrageous. A practical blasphemy of everything the U.N. is supposed to stand for. Yet the OIC and the rest of the world just yawn and let the absolutely lowest of criminal slime to occupy an extremely important and needed arm of the U.N. to help prevent just the type of human rights violations that Sudan commits every day.

If you look at that number of Islamic nations that vote together as a block, 57. You will see that it controls who is on the UN Commission on Human Rights. Iran, Syria Libya have all been on the commission. They have a permanent agenda of listing Israel as a violator in every meeting and putting up resolutions. Even though Israel has been taking Sudanese refugees.

They never condemn each other even though Amnesty International has books full of violations. The cruelty and barbarism is beyond our comprehension.

This dead beat Commission has a permanent majority of countries which are either ruled by dictators,
fundamentalist regimes or out and out nut cases.
It should be abolished yesterday!!

"Why isn't there more outrage and opposition to these primitives in the advanced nations? "

++++++++++++++++++ Excellent question!

Noted, tweeted, and disgusted. This is totally irony, and what makes it especially bad is the U.S. pays for it.

"The Obama Administration promised that when a country is under Security Council sanction for massive human-rights abuses, "it should be barred, plain and simple, from leadership roles like chairmanships in U.N. bodies. Abusers of international law or norms should not be the public face of the U.N."

Time for the President to spend some of his political "capital" and ensure this outrageous appointment does NOT happen. This is NOT who we are nor what we stand for and we most definitely should not stand for this.

The UN should be kicked out of the US never to be seen here again! It's a disgrace having them on US soil and letting crap like this go on! Out with the UN!
