Pam, Unfortunately, you have the accepted the propaganda version of Ataturk that the Turks themselves have put out for many years, but he was one of the biggest mass murderers of the 20th century.

In the early 1900s Ataturk said he wanted to cleanse (the actual word he used) once-Christian 'Turkey' (the old Byzantine Empire, settled by Greeks for 8000 years) of all Christians and he and the 'Young Turks' set about their systematic genocide (that was the first time that word was used).

At Ataturk's orders as many as 3 million Christians (Armenian, Assyrian & Greek) were ethnically cleansed from their ancient homeland and slaughtered or starved to death. Few remain today, and those few live in constant fear with restricted rights.

Right now Turkey is still destroying what remains of the 3000 Christian churches/convents/monasteries that existed before the genocide (which Turkey still refuses to accept responsibility for), and they are trying to drive the last monks out of an ancient monastery almost 1700 years old in the eastern part of the country.

The myth of a tolerant Turkey is without any historical proofs. Read the book "Paradise Lost" by Giles Milton for more on this genocide and the horrific massacre of Christians on the Quay of ancient Smyrna as the Turks burned the Christian part of that city while US and other Western ships sat in the bay and let it happen (they didn't want to 'offend' Turkey and lose their trade - sound familiar?) (Also good is "From the Holy Mountain" by Wm. Dalrymple)

Turkey always had issues with human rights but now they are joining the other Muslim countries in trying to cover it up. It's OK Turkey, the UN supports your abuses as the panel is full of countries known for it. Any country who tries to combat it is treated as a pariah!

How sad this is!!! The world will soon be coming to an end at this rate....nobody is safe anyplace..thanks to the great religion of peace called Islam!! They teach their young to murder as soon as they can walk! I would be interested in seeing a post listing the # of journalists jailed, and for how long, and why, in let's say a 100 countries...Freedom of speech is so very very important.... Now I hear some countries are trying to restrict internet freedom... It's awful.
I feel very concerned about us installing these weapons and manpower, however small, in Turkey along it's border with Syria.... If anything we, the World that is, need true Peacemakers in order to survive our barbaric natures that appear to be pushing the envelope of safety and sanity.....
Peace needs to be our mantra............ There IS always a solution. The mind may not see it. The heart always does. It's arrived at by taking the high road...the way less traveled...the path of heart.
We are all in this together...and we need to work things out !! Lets all grow up and treat others how we want to be treated. Become real Human Beings......... Keep passing that on !!

Hartson Doak, as our answer to your ill-informed comment has been removed by Care2 we want to say again that the Islamists who do violent jihad to force the world to submit to Islam and its deity allah, ARE doing exactly what Mohammed taught. You obviously haven't read the qur'an, hadith and sirah as we have. They unashamedly preach hate and violence against all non-Muslims.

Mohammed lived a life of debauchery, mass murder, pedophilia, rape, ownership of sex slaves, banditry, lying, torture and his god allah smiled on it all.

Jesus taught love, nonviolence, tolerance and lived a blameless and godly life. He lived and taught the exact opposite of Mohammed (as Islam's own trilogy of texts proudly tell).

BTW Allah is NOT the god of the Jews/Christians. Allah is the name of the old chief pagan god of the Arab pagan pantheon. He was the moon god and the people long before Mohammed shouted 'allahu akbar' - Allah is greater - greater than all the other Arab gods.

Allah is the 4th name Mohammed used for his new religion's deity when he finally reached agreement with the pagans. He also kept much of the pagan religion's rituals like the Ka'aba, making the hajj or pilgrimage to Mecca, the lunar month of fasting (originally in honor of the moon god Allah). You'll note that the symbols of Islam are still the crescent moon and star - the symbols of the old pagan religion's gods.
