Earthquake in Chengdu
Monday, May 12, 2008, 01:37 AM
A lot of you will have heard by now that there has been an earthquake in Chengdu. We're getting a lot of worried people contacting us - so just a quick post to let you know that all is OK at the sanctuary.
The news is still coming in, but the good news is that people and bears are safe at the rescue centre in Chengdu. The quake was felt at the sanctuary and everyone ran to the car park - buildings are apparently intact but are now slowly being checked.
There have been no reports of casualties in Chengdu on the news as yet, although it's all still coming in - and there are stories of buildings collapsing in Yunnan.
Phone lines are down at the centre and communication on email is sporadic. Will let you know more as soon as we know.

Sorry if anyone disagrees with me, but I'm going to be honest or I couldn't live with myself... Much as I slag off the Chinese whenever I get the chance, I'm upset about this news. Anyone can be affected here, children, animal lovers and animals. I only wish bad Karma to those who inflict pain, and there are waaaaaaaaaaaay too many of them in China, but this is tragedy to random people and animals and I don't like it. I slag off the Spanish too, as there's so much cruelty here, but I wouldn't like this happening in my country and affecting the people I love and the good people I don't know but I know exist. Punishment for whoever deserves it, but this is just too horrible.

Monday May 12, 2008, 3:41 pm
Humans say :its just an animal...kill it ..eat it..torture it..!! in this case i say :they are just humans...same stuff ..each of us has an opinion ..simple as that.

Wolong panda reserve is in quake-affected area
At the San Diego Zoo, which has a researcher in Beijing, spokeswoman Christina Simmons said: ”We have heard through our contacts in China that the Wolong Giant Panda Research Center was not seriously affected.” The zoo’s researcher in Beijing is also well, Simmons said in an e-mail.

Silence from panda haven
Yesterday's earthquake rocked one of the nation's main panda breeding centers, sparking concern for the welfare of the endangered animals.
The epicenter of the quake was in Wenchuan county, home to the Wolong Nature Reserve, the leading research and breeding center for the endangered animals.
Xinhua News Agency quoted an official of the the State Forestry Administration as saying about eight hours after the quake struck that the center was "out of contact." And officials at Sichuan province's forestry department also had no word from the center.

To Communist China if you are reading this, it is time you stop the senseless killing of innocent humans in Tibet, killing Falungong practitioners in your own country. And you harvest organs from these innocent people when they are still alive.
You are also killing wild animals and eating them, not to mention the dogs who are humans best friends. For the readers to know more about cruel China go to Epoch Times website and read articles or view the videos on Nine Commentaries and you will know the atrocities done by this evil country.
I assure you Communist China if you do not changed now more unimaginable events will happened to your country

I am appalled by your comments regarding the human victims of the earthquake in china. Do you think the children that were killed were responsible for the cruelty perpetrated by sicko adults on the animals? If that is your attitude - I think YOU ALL need some lessons in humanity yourselves. Yes, it is horrendeous what is being done to those poor creatures and must be stamped out at all cost - but to be so callous as to say you feel nothing for the death of children is really sad. Go ahead - lambast me.

Thanks for the update Daphne, thank goodness all is well at the sanctuary. I saw on the news reports, the dogs helping to search for buried victims....proving to be mans best friend as always!....and yet we all know how they are treated in this country.....even after they give so much love and kindness!
Tuesday May 13, 2008, 6:02 am
Yes, you´re right Daphne, we agree and disagree on this, thanks for that, and I´m glad that´s not going to change anything, as I appreciate everyone´s efforts here way too much and appreciate you all very much as people.
I still feel children cannot have any bad Karma to pay, nor can animals, nor can a lot of people who DO care, and they do exist. Of course, with such an unbelievably-vast number of inhabitants, there´s bound to be LOADS AND LOADS of bad people in comparison to other countries, and I´ll never dispute that there are TONS of evil people there (I´ve posted comment after comment after comment, within Care2 news and within petitions, saying just that... I´ve called them evil time and time again, and that´s not going to stop!). Having said that, even if the ratio of good people is small in comparison to bad people, the fact that there are SO VERY MANY Chinese people means that there has to be a large amount of good people (even if the proportion of good to bad is small), and I will never wish good people anywhere anything bad, plus people´s pets - there´s bound to be many of them too.
And of course Daphne is right... humans say "it´s just an animal, kill it, torture it, etc", I´m not disputing it and feel no sadness for anything bad happening to such people, but we´re humans too, and that doesn´t make us evil by default.
Anyway, just had to disagree (slightly) with you all FOR A CHANGE, mind.

I think too many hours in front of the computer screen have liquified the brains of some people. LOL??!! Did you miss the part about innocent people and children being crushed under rubble? If you believe in Karma then the USA is certain to be destroyed by a nuclear explosion. I am ashamed that so many care 2 members are so insensitive to animal suffering (human animals that is)
Tuesday May 13, 2008, 7:25 am
Also, i must add that many of these comments have racist overtones. The USA has one of the worst human rights records (slavery) and animal rights records (factory farming, cosmetics testing), not to mention that we buy the crap that they make in China, and yet when Hurricaine Katrina hit how many of you all were LOL? Did you think that was funny, karma maybe? I guess its different because they are Chinese, not even human maybe according to you all. I may even flag some of your comments as inappropriate, i would hate for a child to read such hateful messages. I repeat, it was innocent people and children who were killed!

When I got the good news from Jill in my e-mail box (Animals Asia Foundation), I said: I thank "God" that at least the animals there are free from danger and harm! ! - But despite "most" of Chinese are evil to the animals, I have prayed for them. This could have happened anywhere! Isn´t? - But happened in China! Hummmmmmmmmm...

When Innocent people die whether it is China or Mayanmar the world has to rise as one and help
The Chinse Giovernment has aacted quickly and are doing the best according to their news agency. We cannot get any other news from there.
We can only pray for them

Rare giant pandas' survive China quake
BEIJING - A state news agency says 60 rare pandas at a research center near the epicenter of a devastating earthquake are safe.
The Xinhua News Agency's report Tuesday said the pandas, which are among the world's rarest animals, at a center in the city of Chengdu were safe following the 7.9-magnitude quake.
There was no immediate word on the status of pandas at the Wolong Nature Reserve, a bigger breeding center outside Chengdu that has about 280 pandas, according to Xinhua. It said earlier the quake cut off communications with that facility.
About 1,600 pandas live in the wild in China's mountainous west and another 180 live in captivity.

Pandas 'safe' at park after quake
Sichuan's panda reserves have been named a Unesco World Heritage Site
The 86 giant pandas at China's famous Wolong Nature Reserve are all safe after Monday's earthquake devastated nearby areas of Sichuan province, forestry officials told the official Xinhua news agency.
All of the baby pandas at the reserve had been moved to safe places, the State Forestry Administration said on Tuesday.
The 2,000 sq km reserve is the nation's most famous giant panda park and is in a rugged area north-west of Sichuan's provincial capital, Chengdu, not far from the quake's epicentre.
It is the world's foremost conservation, research and breeding centre for giant pandas.
Dozens of the animals live within the reserve, which sits in bamboo forests on the slopes of 6,250-metre Mount Siguniang.
Chinese officials said that 60 giant pandas at a breeding centre in Chengdu and another eight at a smaller base in Ya'an, to the south, were not harmed by the earthquake.
Fears had been growing for the safety of the Wolong pandas after the earthquake cut all lines of communication with the reserve.
Rescue team
The giant panda remains one of the world's most endangered species.
Only about 1,600 pandas are thought to remain in the wild, in mountainous regions of Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, while about 200 more live in captivity.
Dozens of pandas have been born in the Wolong reserve
The animals have been hit by a severe loss of habitat, as well as their own slow rate of reproduction.
In 2006, UN cultural agency Unesco declared the panda reserves in Sichuan a World Heritage Site.
Unesco says the reserves constitute "the largest remaining contiguous habitat of the giant panda... and the species' most important site for captive breeding".
Wolong is the most well-known of these reserves, attracting tens of thousands of tourists each year.
Its breeding programme, which includes the use of artificial insemination, has drawn worldwide attention.
Experts there have also experimented with releasing pandas born in captivity back into the wild.
In 2006, a young male panda, Xiang Xiang, was released into the wild after three years of preparation in a specially-constructed enclosure.
The panda died 10 months later, apparently after a fight with another male panda, but officials said that they had learned valuable lessons from the experiment.
Xinhua news agency said that a rescue team from the State Forestry Administration (SFA) had been set up to direct efforts at panda reserves.
The SFA has also allocated 2m yuan ($286,000; £143,000) to pay for food and drugs in affected reserves, it said.

Moon Bear charity Animals Asia, which was featured in yesterday's Adver, received thousands of calls from people who were concerned for the welfare if staff and bears at the charity's sanctuary in China.
Former Swindon resident, Jill Robinson, pictured left, who founded the charity, said: "Immediately after the terrible news about the earthquake we received thousands of calls from worried supporters fearing for staff and bears at the sanctuary.
"The good news is that the people and the bears are okay but our hearts go out to families of all those who have lost their lives."
Sarah Chilvers, a Swindon supporter of the charity said: "My husband and I were in Chengdu in October last year and I hear that the area was quite badly effected by the quake.
"The staff I got to know during my time are all safe even though there had been damage done to the buildings."
Heather Bacon, the charity's senior vet, who is in Chengdu at the sanctuary, said: "Buildings were shaking and the office and accommodation block shook a lot too and was quite dodgy.
"The accommodation is unsafe and there are cracks in the ceiling.
"The ground was moving and building was swaying quite a bit.
"There are tiles missing off roofs.
"Some concrete has fallen down and there's a big hole in the roof of a kitchen but the people and bears are okay.
"However, we're still getting tremors and aftershocks."
Relief workers from Wiltshire could soon be sent out to the region to help with the rescue efforts.
Rapid UK, based in Gloucestershire, said its members were ready to lend their support.
Director Graham Payne said: "We have made an offer of help to the Chinese embassy in London and the British embassy in Beijing but none of our offers have been taken up."
And travel agents in Swindon have advised people against travelling to China if they can.
Jerry Clarke from Swindon Travel, in Havelock Street, said: "The Home Office has told us to advise all our passengers against travelling unless it is essential."
