What a joy to receive this news. There are remarkably dedicated people who diligently go about the business of making "ordinary" miracles happen. With a heart full of joy and admiration, a salute to everyone who invested their humanity and advocacy on Jenny's behalf. Kathy, you get high kudos for bringing this most welcome news to all of us...brava!

Finally!! I'm so happy for her.

I hope this park in Mexico will be a good home for her. I'm sure the zoo people checked it out. Anyone here ever heard of this wildlife park?

I'm going to cut and paste the statement from the man at the Dallas zoo and send it to the San Antonio zoo, that's holding Lucky hostage. Maybe this will further show them that she needs to be moved, as well.

Has anybody heard of this place she is supposed to be going.
I can't help it, I just don't trust officials.

"The elephant is a friend to man More than the dog, it's constant. And now indeed our turn has come to be the Friend of the elephant." From the song, Friends of the Elephant, composed by Paul Hippeau, for the Society of the Friends of the Elephant at their 1906 banquet.

"There is no creature among all the Beasts of the world which hath so great and ample demonstration of the power and wisdom of almighty God as the Elephant." Edward Topsell, The Historie of Foure-Footed Beastes

Many dogs & cats are loved dearly as much for who & what they are to people. These animals are very lucky to have people who care deeply for them.
Then there are those poor dogs & cats who are severely mistreated. Right????!!!!!

But, Jenny is or was in a unique situation of being cared for but having no bondage with any other elephant........Elephants need a connection & bondage to other elephants as much as any other animal would or should have!!

Hopefully this clears up any misunderstanding of the quotes I posted. Also, if I cared only for very few or a select group of animals I doubt that I would be on Care2!!!!!!!

sorry guys, but this is NOT good news. Jenny should go to The Elephant Sanctuary here in the U.S. (www.Elephants.com)

"Animal activists had requested Jenny be moved to a sanctuary to ensure mental and physical well-being.

"Once these animals go out of the country, it’s very difficult to ensure they’re going to get the care that they need," said Lisa Wathne, a national spokesperson for PETA. The group plans to protest the move.

"We are appalled that the Dallas Zoo would send Jenny out of the country to an unknown facility where she will not be protected by U.S. Animal Welfare Act law. This move is not in Jenny’s best interest," said Catherine Doyle, campaign director with In Defense of Animals, based in San Rafael, Calif. "

For General Zoo Information, please call 214-670-5656.This is the number for the Dallas Zoo. Maybe if they get bombarded with phone calls from us all, they'll keep Jenny in the United States. I was just so happy that Jenny was going to be with other elephants.... But then, Mexico? Maybe not such a good idea.

I share Ton's thoughts about moving Jenny:
Animal rights activists plan to protest the move because they are not convinced that it is in Jenny's best interest. They noted that U.S. laws that protect zoo animals would not be enforced in Mexico.

Also do they have a webcam? Do they use Protected Contact? How large is the elephant enclosure? I heard about a wildlife park that is drive through only? Is this the same facility? (If so that would be be favorable)

Sorry, but I have to agree with Tony & Echo. Once any animal leaves the U.S. it's hard to ensure safety for them. Maybe if could ask Dallas to keep her in a sanctuary here in the U.S. that would be a better idea. I will phone Dallas zoo today with number that Kathy so kindly provided.
TY Deb C.4 the forward. TY Kathy for caring so very much hon..this is noted.
Blessings to all

The last part on that site got my attention;

Green says Jenny will leave in the fall. He says the Zoo will not have an elephant exhibit for the next couple of years until a new Savannah project is funded and ready to roll out. In the meantime, the Zoo plans to expand the giraffe compound with two or three new giraffes and an INTERACTIVE component for zoo visitors.

Whats this Savanna project? And from what funding? Elephant exhibit in next couple of years? Is it not best to end the use of elephants in zoos, to stop bringing them in the zoo?

Nina T. (105)
Wednesday June 25, 2008, 9:16 am
I don't know what the Savanna project is ...they are suspending the elephants here in Cleveland, too, for a couple of years I thought is was to improve their conditions..

Nina...I almost think they are
trying to rid of the elephants
to make more room for us....
Us humans, which is sorely true for all animals.......

No one can say there
are six billion elephants as there
are six billion of us.......

Give that some thought.

I just emailed the Dallas Zoo thanking them for wanting to move her, but questioning - why Mexico, and not PAWS or TES?

I wrote that we in the animal welfare community are concerned, and would appreciate if they'd post info on their website about this wildlife park, and why they feel the move to Mexico is the correct choice.

This is a step in the right direction. Often the emotional needs of captive animals are not understood or blatantly ignored. Elephants are such awesome, emotional, and social beings. It's nice to hear some good news.

SHE'S ONLY GOING TO HAVE 5 ACRES OF FREEDOM! :o(

"We looked at the total picture for Jenny and determined that going to Africam Safari was best for her," Siegel said. "We think the public will be fine with it, especially knowing we intend to bring elephants back."

Africam Safari is a 617-acre park with a 5-acre elephant habitat. The facility is accredited by the U.S.-based Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Siegel and Greene said.

Great News

ABC De (78)
Sunday June 29, 2008, 2:09 pm
HOld the phone boys and girls.... NO ONE should be happy for Jenny leaving the country! NO .. this is not great news!

Why wasn't the Elephant Sanctuary choosen? Or PAWS? Is the AZA condoning this move? Or the USDA? Why should this elephant go to Mexico?

Waaay omany questions... not enough answers. Should be "NO DECISION" until ALL FACTORS are considered.

Linda B. (57)
Sunday June 29, 2008, 3:08 pm
ABC - I contacted the zoo, and he replied. He states that the Mexico facility is overseen by the AZA. He also went on to state the reasons why he's not so impressed by the US sanctuaries.

This way they still own Jenny, and can bring her back if and when they improve the zoo habitat.

Personally, I don't agree with him on his claims that Mexico is better than the sanctuaries. Unfortunately, he doesn't give a damn what I, or anyone else thinks. It's a done deal, and that's where she's going. I hope to God it works out for her.

We need everyone's support to move Jenny to the elephant sanctuary in Tennessee. Sunday, july 27th come out to the dallas zoo to protest jenny moving to mexico. the US has better animal welfare laws, and for jenny to switch countries is unethical. think about yourself being forced into a new country without the same "human" welfare laws. come out and support; we need 100 people.
lets do this for jenny.
