But, lemurs aren't the only ones hurt by illegal logging. Industries and governments lose billions of dollars globally each year from illegal logging and the trade in illicit wood. The U.S. hardwood industry suffers because it must compete with artificially reduced world market prices caused by illegal logging of tropical forests. And illegal logging contributes to tropical deforestation, which causes about 15 percent of heat-trapping emissions worldwide.

The United States created the world's first law to stop the import of illegal wood and wood products when Congress added some key amendments to the Lacey Act in 2008. However, the Lacey Act is under attack.

The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote soon on a bill that would gut the Lacey Act. If passed, the legislation would hamper efforts to combat illegal logging and our ability to protect the most precious species on the planet, including the lemurs that rely on these forests for their survival.

Write your congressional representative today: urge a NO vote on H.R. 3210, the Retailers and Entertainers Lacey Implementation and Enforcement Fairness Act (RELIEF Act).

Please personalize the letter below to ensure your letter is as effective as possible. Be sure to mention any related expertise you have with forests and conservation science.

Learn more about the illegal logging and the Lacey Act in our recent report, Logging and the Law: How the U.S. Lacey Act Helps Reduce Illegal Logging in the Tropics.

signed. I hope that we all keep in the forefront of our minds that truth that animals being raised to be consumed as "food" for humans is destroying forests everywhere, ruining and wasting fresh waters, acidifying oceans, creating desertification, climate change, soil and crop poisoning, extinction of species, bee colony collapse, ... and worse. We are spiritual beings here, all life forms. We take life for granted and kill and harm, when we are evolved enough to see that all is SACRED. We must abide by the Cosmic Law and NEVER KILL or participate in the harming of any part of this exceptional Earth! It is a gem and must be honored.

Tammy, your little trick worked, thank you. Normally I leave US politics alone, but in a case like this, it is not just a US problem and I need to have my say. So I didn't mind telling a little white lie for the sake of the Lemurs.
Again ty Tammy, I see you live in BC. I have been there, so beautiful !!!
