PEDAL POWER: More than half of the city's roads, including some which are congested, are relatively safe for cyclists due to 'traffic cooling', say cycling advocates. This, despite traffic Not sure that many Western cities could say the same!

My climate does't allow for cycling year-round, except for the most hard-core enthusiasts, but weather permitting, I cycle to work as much as possible for nearly nine months of the year. It's about 45 minutes/13 km each way, so it keeps me in shape, saves me a lot of money on gas, and reduces air pollution. I also try to do most of my errands, i.e. grocery shopping, the same way.

Obviously, if you live too far away from your place of work, it's not an option, but if you do live close by, give it a try. Too many people have been conditioned to believe that a bicycle is a child's toy or that cycling is simply a recreational activity. Once you "grow up", an adult uses a car to get around. We need to break out of that mindset and start to see the bicycle as a viable transportation option, not to be ridiculed, but admired.

Many trips work well with a combination of ways of moving (most car drives end up with a walk from where we park to where we want to be) - consider using bikes and buses or trains together
