Women are 51% of the United States. Moreover, women carry the bulk of the load as carers in the home. There are 14 men and 1 woman on the working group that is drafting the Senate bill on health care. We demand equal representation for this bill.

Petition Background
Women represent more than half the population of the U.S. and deserve to be represented in the working group writing the health care legislation.

It was absolutely unconscionable when Mitch McConnell announced that there was a team of 13 Republican men overseeing the nation's health care policies with no input from women earlier this month. Afterward, Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski expressed dismay by telling reporters, "I just wanna make sure we have some women on."

And only after massive public outcry did Republican senators invite one woman to join the committee—Sen. Shelley Moore Capito—and it's unclear if she will remain on it permanently. Making matters worse, they also invited Sen. Ron Johnson to join permanently, making the permanent working group 14 Republican men.

Fourteen Republican men and only one woman charting the fate of our entire health care system is not acceptable.

Amid fears of pre-existing conditions and cuts to Medicare, this bill is extremely unpopular to Republicans and Democrats alike—only 21% of Americans surveyed by Quinnipiac University approved.

The Congressional Budget Office also hasn't yet scored the Trumpcare 2.0 bill passed by the House earlier this month. Yet its score is reportedly going to be even worse than the assessment of the House's first health care overhaul bill introduced in March, in which estimates were that 24 million more Americans could be uninsured by 2026, compared to the current healthcare system.

It's ironic to look back at reports from 2009 - the image I chose was from then!
The health care debate has raised a lot of important women's issues and shined a spotlight on inequalities that still exist," says Alina Salganicoff, vice president for women's health policy at the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Being a woman is not a preexisting condition!!!

One’s gender IS a preexisting condition that neither qualifies nor disqualifies a person. I don’t see how a vagina or a penis can qualify a person for a job—other than a job that requires those body parts! Aren’t we all more than just the sum of our body parts?

First reports were that this working group was exclusively (white) older Republican males, now they seem to have added the token woman, but "balanced" it with adding another white older male. It's a farce. Republican senators obviously have no intention to make Trumpcare even the slightest bit more acceptable and definitely note for women.

I certainly did sign. Passed a story around awhile back with the all male faces and one woman making vital decisions for our health care. I also added that not only should women be added but some of color as well, minorities are not well represented and they have unique health conditions as well, Sickle Cell tends to be a disease that the African American have more often than others. Perhaps these white men might chose not to cover that as well.

SAM - you're confusing one's SEX with one's GENDER!
Sex is a biological condition. Gender is a social construct created around one's sex, created by social perceptions, assumptions and values. And gender perceptions are changing (too slowly, perhaps!!)

The evolution of the term "gender" has been due to efforts to differentiate between biological differences (which define certain roles - such as child-bearing - and practical differences ... such as WC facilities needed) and social - not innate, therefore modifiable - differences.

And when referring to "not being a pre-existing condition" - this refers specifically to insurance discrimination ...

Discrimination that is all the more intolerable because of the realities! After all - men play a part in creating physical conditions such as pregnancy!! But being male is a factor in prostate cancer - yet THAT isn't an "pre-existing condition" filter for health insurance ratings!

Dandelion - ******************************************************* very true; added to which, racially-linked social factors also cause differences in access to health care (concentrations of blacks, Native Americans, Latinos etc in areas poorly served because they have been caught more in poverty traps, lesser opportunities to break out of poverty ...) Perhaps one should also be calling for public consultations, voices through NGOs working with disadvantaged groups ...

But with this administration - and the insurance business - one has to be careful how one presents arguments! Otherwise they'll increase insurance for blacks because of "pre-existing condition" which makes them prone to sickle cell anaemia ...
(By the way - having such anaemias actually reduces risk of getting malaria !!!!)

The committee should be diverse --- men, women, white and minorities. One designation should not out weigh any other. Of course the bloody Republicans won't see it that way. For the most part, they are a bunch of grumpy old pharts!
