Earthjustice took its ongoing fight to stop the killing of two wolf packs in central Idaho’s Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals today. Earthjustice filed an emergency motion asking the Ninth Circuit to preserve the wolves and their vital contribution to the wilderness character of the largest forested wilderness in the lower-48 states.

A federal district court judge in Idaho rejected our request for an injunction to stop the program last Friday and we immediately initiated an appeal to the Ninth Circuit. The most recent available information indicates that a hunter-trapper hired by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game has already killed nine wolves from the Golden Creek and Monumental Creek packs. Earthjustice is asking for a court injunction to stop the program before the remaining wolves in these two packs are killed.
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game claims that the program is needed to inflate elk populations for the benefit of commercial outfitters and recreational hunters. But federal law requires a wilderness area to be managed as a place where wild processes, including predator-prey interactions, occur without man’s interference.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Forest Service, which manages the Frank Church Wilderness on behalf of the American people, has not lived up to its responsibility to enforce this legal mandate for wilderness protection in this case. Fortunately, the citizens of this country have a right to ask the federal courts to hold government officers accountable for complying with the law. That is what Earthjustice is doing right now before the Ninth Circuit

Earthjustice is representing long-time Idaho conservation advocate Ralph Maughan in the case, along with Defenders of Wildlife, Western Watersheds Project, Wilderness Watch, and the Center for Biological Diversity

"The Idaho Department of Fish and Game claims that the program is needed to inflate elk populations for the benefit of commercial outfitters and recreational hunters" So they want to kill wolves to increase the Elk population so that the Elks can be used for ...recreational hunters ... WHY.... Ban the hunters and let natural interaction between the various animals balance .

I LOVE Earthjustice!! I've said that on C2, previously.
Noted, signed, with a comment left on their site, about intervening in the predator prey connection, for the sake of money.
This has been a very sad and frustrating situation. It seems that the bureaucracies charged with protecting wildlife are beholden financially, and politically to the very people interested in destroying it, AND no one has addressed this situation...probably for political reasons.

What a sad sad world this will be without wolves. Wild animals will linger sick for weeks spreading whatever ails them to their general population and then people will want the wolves back. The abject stupidity of the people in charge of ordering this hunt is overwhelming.

We should not wipe out whole wolf populations to make it easier for hunters to kill elk. We can only hope the Ninth Circuit will do the right thing, but I won't hold my breath. Very sad.

I went to the article and left the comment:

May I suggest the big bad hunters kill each other instead?..I mean what kind of sport is it to kill an unarmed animal..now if you go for the wolf with out a gun/snare, etc..THAT I would pay to see..YOU POS are COWARDS..and I hope when you hunt the elk they shove their horns up your asses in anger..then hope the wolves have you for breakfast..JUSTICE AT LAST

It is a problem and all about a delicate balance. I've seen a lot of petitions for this same thing on killing wolves which seems is happening in many countries right now not only the U.S. I find it odd there are wolf killings in Italy, Sweden, U.S.A., Canada and elsewhere all around the same time. What is going on or is this a usual problem this time of year, does anyone know? I could understand this more if there were so many wolves in cities they were threatening killing children in the yards while playing but out in the wilderness in vast lands where wolves live is another thing....I just don't get it. Wolves need to kill other animals to eat and live...it is sometimes seen as cruel but it is the pecking order of life.

The only thing it looks like we can do is pay close attention on how judges and all lawmakers vote and the decisions the make then vote them out of office the next election.....or start 60's type protests again!

I agree with Debbie S. first comment.

Kathleen, you asked if we had ideas about this, or ways to help.
Personally, I don't believe the Gov't wants this to stop because it is something that is upsetting and heart breaking for almost everyone. Everyone except the hunters of course.

It gets people like us together to try to stop it...and all the big conservation groups that focus on wolves too, and causes our attention to be focused and concentrated on saving what few precious wolves we have left.

There's absolutely no logic behind this killing of simply 2 packs of wolves that are in an area of over a million or 2 acres. They say it's to keep the elk population thriving for hunters, and that is bullshit. There's no possible way that 2 packs of wolves could take out enough elk to even put a dent in the population. In fact, if anything, the elk will over-populate and that will be a problem. We all know the wolves are the natural way to cull the massive herds of elk. Nature's own balance, when humans don't muck things up.

The Gov't has been sued, the people in charge of this killing have been sued, and now there's basically another "stay of execution" to try to stop this. There are already 9 dead (probably more, because this hunter can only be heard from when HE decides to call in and report another wolf kill.

I am really disheartened by how let down we've all been, both the USA and Canada, by our governments letting all this murder of wolves keep going on. Yes, there's been some successes, like in Sweden and a few other areas where the killing has stopped, or at least been put on hold for a while.

I dislike talking about political matters at all. But I think this all politics, and it's another way for us to be distracted by what our hearts hold dear...our wolves, our whales and dolphins, big cats, domestic and stray animals, almost everything we love. And, call me crazy if you like, but I think the Government in the USA and elsewhere WANT us to be distracted because they have bigger fish they are frying...and they want our attention diverted...and it is, and as long as I draw breath, I will continue to fight for what I love, and I know all the rest of you will too.

It's diversionary tactics in my humble opinion. I don't say that lightly and I don't like saying it, but that's what I think. Even though I'm not here at Care2 commenting and making my presence known, I have never given up the fight for animals, humans, and environment. And I won't.

LOL, I guess I should thank you for reading this long-ass post, and now I will go back to being quiet. We'll just keep doing our best to let the powers that be, know that we won't give up.

Thanks again Kathleen, for asking what we think and for posting this. I received the same email as you did, and it's posted all over Facebook daily. If you're on FB, you know that there are maybe hundreds, of groups trying to save wolves and every other precious thing that needs saving. Just like here at Care2...we ALL care.

The Swedish Parliament should be ashamed of themselves for adopting these permits for murder upon wolves ! And shame on those "people" that apply for these permits that will allow them to murder these innocent, beautiful creatures. To hell with them all!
